Sat , as I am , on a breezy west wittering beach got me thinking does anyone use a portable wind turbine to recharge their batteries instead / as well as solar ?

Generally they're not worth it. They are bulky, take time to set up and are pretty noisy. And they don't tend to generate that much energy unless there's actually a pretty good breeze... which happens less often than you'd think.

Hi.
Ask a Yacht owner, they all seem to have them. If you do get one,a clue as to where to park for the night........ Middle of a Wind farm. Lots of Farms seem to have what i would call medium ones ,but those are not portable. Best of luck.

It's windier at sea. And they have plenty of deck and masts to mount them to. And for boats, having additional sources of power can be safety critical (which is rarely the case for a motorhome), so they'll put up with poorer performance. What makes sense on a boat doesn't necessarily make them worthwhile on a van.

I bought and tried a new-to-market compact wind turbine 3 years ago and it was a complete waste of time.

Here's a link to the thread for you to peruse.

spoke to a guy as shell island who had one 30 yds from us that I could hear .
He said waste of time & money, noisy, weak and vibrates through his van no matter what he did. Just leaves it on when he goes out through the day.
Why he attached it to his van and not on a spike or whatever I dont know

I guess they need a very stable mast that isn't going to be blown over. You'd probably need quite a lot of lines to tie it down, which isn't always practical depending on the surface of the pitch. Having a mounting point on the van probably makes it much easier to deploy.
