We are planning a trip in September through France and end up in Spain. Anyone know if need to prebook campsites on route or just turn up and book ?

Shouldn't be necessary to book - end of season is the end of Sept for a lot of sites, depends exactly where.

Welcome! Lots of European travelers on here who will be along shortly. We are off to France in August and only booking 1 site....rest Aires etc

We never book anywhere so you have an option to change direction when see somewhere you want to head to or are chasing the sun. We also use aires which there are thousands of,so you will always find somewhere to stay.

If you intend using campsites often, then consider the ACSI book which offers discounted camp site prices (apparently you can more than cover the cost of the book ?)

not directly related but close too.

the ASCI card is valid for a calendar year. I am looking at going away mid December to mid January. Do you know if the 2023 card will have arrived in time for going away and if not when how is the discount obtained ?

cheers

for the correct answer ....

The only thing we ever book is the tunnel crossing and have never failed yet in finding somewhere to overnight. The trick is having the right info to hand - we have the "All the Aires France" books as well as several apps. A good French website is http://www.i-campingcar.fr/aires/carte.php in French but easy to read and is kept fully up to date. All these are, of course, for the excellent network of aires de camping-car, which are ideal if you are just enroute as you can stop when you feel ready (although a tip would be to start travelling early and stop early to mid-afternoon as the popular ones can get a bit full).

We only use campsites if we want to stop for a couple of days and then the ACSI book is ideal.

In September you should have no trouble finding stopovers.

From the website.

What is the CampingCard ACSI delivery time?
Is it possible to receive the CampingCard ACSI guide before December?
Because the guides cannot be printed earlier, it is unfortunately not possible to send the guides before December.
Are you a subscriber or did you order before 7 November? Then the product will be delivered before Christmas.
Did you order after 7 November? Then the product will be delivered as soon as possible after Christmas.
When does CampingCard ACSI become available?
The CampingCard ACSI is available from medio December. The enclosed discount card is valid in the calendar year that is printed on the guide, no earlier Are you a subscriber or did you order before 7 November? Then the product will be delivered before Christmas.
Did you order after 7 November? Then the product will be delivered as soon as possible after Christmas.

You could order it but you will most likely be away when its delivered. you could apply for the club ID card which when shown could get you discount ,don't forget a lot of sites will be closed . An option is to get the books and card off a member close by who has finished with them .(you can have mine if you pm me)

I have a membership and the books and card for this year. Am going to France in September so will use it. I think when signing up initially it defaulted to a subscription which probably auto renews. Was just wondering about the 2023 card etc in relation to being away from mid December. Guess will see what happens this year.

Although ,alltheaires gets poo pooed a bit on here for being out of date before it's printed, by me as well I will admit it is handy for looking at Aires way in front just to see if there is one where you are going if you don't find another.
We have one that is about five years old, plenty good enough for how much we use it but always handy to have about.

Will be using mine until August so free after that and Mister B has claimed it for his September trip.

We try to avoid arriving at sites Friday or Saturday when they can be busy if in touristy area. Also be mindful of fiestas in Spain We have been caught out a few times by turning up and finding some major attraction for people from surrounding cities with no room left at the Inn.
Mind you there is a fiesta on somewhere Spain every day. Usually you can find another site within 10k if you end up pitchless for a couple of nights.

We used this in March have cancelled it as the sites we used were cheaper than the book price so ask for their best price before you mention ACSI

Well if you're in Spain, many of the campsites there sell the books at reception. So come January you could buy one from the campsite for 2023.

We used to be in this but the only two times we used it were not good, the first one was advertising on the gate a cheaper price than was in the book the second put us in a very inferior spot, so never bothered again although the book itself is worth the money for the list of sites if that's what you are in to, but once you have one you don't need another.

Doubt your new 2023 won’t be delivered in time we always buy the New Years book on our way down there are a few sites in Spain that sell them by doing that you have the new book with the discount card in it.The membership card is not the discount card.
A couple of sites that sell books.
Camping Caceres . Los Rosaleda,Conil de Frontera.

We always use sites and have the ACSI book and use their sites if they are in the location we want, but don't go out of our way to stay there. It's still good value but check the non- ACSI going rate first. In 30 years of using French sites for 6 weeks in spring and 6 weeks Aug/Sept the only time we ever booked was to secure a particular pitch where we could stay with our friends who had a tent. Always got into the sites we wanted without booking but tend to stay away from the very busy coastal and "transit" sites.
We tend to wander so booking would commit us to a fixed plan which is precisely what we don't want!

I would say its difficult to say, depends where you are heading.

We have been camping and touring Europe for 40 years. Sometimes its busy, sometimes its quiet.

Cote D'Azur will be very busy. A couple of sites also no longer accept touring outfits. The same can be said for some parts of the Western mediterranean French Coast.

Again, I understand that some people do not use sites. But the Aire at Cavaliere can get very busy. You are very likely to get a knock on the door by the police if you try to pull up and overnight in a lot of lay-bys. Especially along the coast.

September in Spain is often a little easier though. Overnighting in old Towns and Villages is usually easier too.

Again, if there is a particular site or pitch you would like on sites, make sure you book. Benidorm sites get booked up as do a lot near benicassim

We've always found the CC app you get with ACSI invaluable for finding decent campsites. Usually they just say go find a free pitch and tell us which one you taken but if we haven't liked a designated pitch for shade or proximity to toilets etc, we've just asked for a change. Always come with electricity included in the discounted price too. Never found that their own rates are cheaper than ACSI price. The filters on the app are great too so only sites with swimming pools need be shown. A real bonus after a long days driving. Recently we have added "Naturiste" sites to our filters in holiday themes because, although not for everyone for whatever reason, we have found them to be superior in pitch size and facilities and very friendly too. We just wish there were more of them available.

Just got back from France and Spain and Acsi was ok in France but not Spain as no savings in Spain sites were the same price or cheaper.

We are going to do the same thing and have/will only book ferry and tunnel. Use search for sites and if your first choice is full or not what you want just move on. You may find more full site in August but come September should be fine.

We did France/Spain last October/November. The only thing we booked was a one crossing to Calais.

We used park4nite, Camping Car Park in France, ACSI for some longer stops in Spain, search for sites.

Spain has some good free motorhome parks in lot's of towns (water/waste facilities only) and is great for 'off grid camping'too.

Just come back from Ireland and we used an ACSI site where the ACSI rate was the same as their standard. The only difference was the electricity where we were entitled to 16a rather than the standard 6a - which was immaterial anyway as they only had 16a EHU.........
You gotta love the Irish!

we never plan unless we need to be somewhere on a definite date .In fact weve seldom decided which way to turn when we get of the ferry

We use Aires in France, and some in Spain. We just turn up mid afternoon and park. We do book some sites in Spain as the ones we like do get full. We go in September.
