With the motorhome and caravan club and camping and caravanning club you more or less know what size pitch to expect. Also the distance you can expect from your neighbour.
We have just returned from a week staying on a private 5-star site in North Wales. The site was very attractive and very well run. We had booked a service pitch and were very disappointed by its size. If we were in a caravan you would have had to choose as to whether you put up an awning or sat out in chairs. Certainly no room for both. Any car would have to be parked in front.
Some pitches were more generous but the terrace we were on were all limited in size and distance from your neighbours.

Campsites all have different sized pitches. We've seen many small ones in Europe, particularly. There, it seems, the more expensive the site, the smaller the pitch. This is likely because they're close to touristy areas with high demand, can get higher prices and can receive even more by piling them in.

I think it sometime boils down to luck.
Sometimes I don’t think the person who allocates the pitches if that’s their policy don’t actually know how big the pitches are on their own sites or read the part that gives the vehicle size.

A while back on a site in Wales the original pitch we were allocated would have just been big enough for a 4 man ridge tent. Right in front on the other side of the single track road was a large shrub , it would have been impossible for us to get our 6m long van onto the pitch and get out of the side door.
We were told to take another pitch that was allocated to someone else who was behind us in the queue to check in.
We chose to park on the field instead where there were no fixed pitches.
Unbelievably a young couple 2days later pitched a pup tent 2m from the front of our van, we were parked sideways facing the sun.
if we had wanted to leave we would have had to run them down to get out!

yep, we found this early august when we decided to have a trip to the peaks, went to a highly recommended private campsite and the pitch we had was a lot smaller than the CAMC one we'd been on the month before and the night after.
funny that some people whinge about the CAMC and CCC being regimented, but I think they're simply organised and standardised so at least you know what you are getting.
