Returning to the van at Carrick last night, I had one of those feelings of being followed in the dark. Every time I turned to look behind me, I saw a very camera shy seal drop out of sight.

Desperate to catch it on camera, I turned the kayak round and paddled backwards for a little while and sure enough, the seal popped back up. It didn’t hang around long once it realised I was looking at it, but it was worth it to see it so close to the kayak.

Unfortunately my GoPro camera has tried to compensate for the near dark conditions by brightening the image and making it blurry.

Worth mentioning that yesterday we traveled down the Ayrshire coast south of Girvan and saw more seals basking than ever before. It's normal to see a few on the rocks at high tide but there were dozens of them.

A couple of seals bobbing about off the beach at NEB last week until a couple of guys who launched their rib from the site scared them off by travelling at speed to get closer to them! Twats!

Unfortunately, occasionally they don’t always think about their actions. Slow and quiet works best.

Some of my best encounters with seals was diving from my RIB many years ago, when I often had them nipping my dive fins ?

ambulancekidd I was through your way again this morning, returning a demo kayak to Coylton, then a quick run back to Durham for work tomorrow. Still hoping to spot you one day and test your kettle ?

You should go out to the Farne islands with some scuba gear on and just drift around in the kelp, they will find you and play with your fins... as long as you don't make any sudden movements..

You sir are psychic.... Most of my diving and the vast majority of my seal encounters were around the Farnes ?

At Kari-tek in Stair?
Close.... I don’t know if you’re aware of the fairly recent marriage split within the company, but the manufacturing side of Karitek, Teal Engineering, is still being run by Geoff at Annbank.

Karitek is still being run by Ann at Coylton, but she has sold her house and office and is relocating to Tayvallich near Oban. The demo kayak went back to Ann this morning.
