Compass Drifter 410
Hi All,

Our 2000 Compass Drifter on a Boxer 2.5TD chassis has a bit of a dodgy gearbox - 1st to 2nd gear is best completely avoided as it sounds like grinding a metal cat against a barbed wire wrapped radiator, and 3rd gives a good "chunk" when engaging - provided its at less than 20mph otherwise it's not nice. 4th and 5th seem perfectly fine however, so most of the driving at the moment involves starting in 2nd (which is interesting on hills), and getting to 4th as fast as possible.

My local garage in Aberdeen has looked at it, but can't get synchro parts. I have another garage to try in Forfar who are reportedly gearbox specialists, but failing that has anyone bought synchro spares from ebay or similar, and did they work out ok? Fitting them myself is likely out of the question but if need be I could source and ask a garage to do it for me. (One who will fit aftermarket parts anyway).

Cheers,
S

Have you investigated the linkage.
Used to be a common fault on the older ones, the main shaft as it enters the box was a favorite to ware.

Yep it's a long way but Gloucester road gearboxes in Bristol do them. I had my box completely refurbished recently. The guy there told me they couldn't get any more parts at the moment but they had stock.

Thanks all. Will try this next place in Forfar as they can do rebuilds/refurbs it seems and if not, I guess I can always get it taken out and shipped down on a pallet for a refurb at one of the above.

Sod the gearbox I'm more interested to know what kind of upbringing the op had if his house had barbed wire round the radiators and parents who bought him a metal cat instead of a teddy šŸ» šŸ˜†

coastal motorhomes might be able to help they certainly do the 5th gears and syncro hubs, as for driving it as it is are you double declutching? my first car had worn syncro but drove it a long time before changing gearbox

Yes - double declutching meantime, but that's not something my wife is able to do and I'd rather get it resolved so it wasn't as necessary. The van came to us like this (we bought it at auction earlier in the year), so god knows how the previous owner drove it!
