Hi fellow funsters, we are booked to go to the Peterborough Show and then onwards to tour Scotland. We have a motorhome, just short of 8 metres and would like to have any advice you can give us on touring Scotland. We love scenery and would also like to engage in Scottish Traditions (whisky etc). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Sheila & George.

Where in Scotland do you intend to visit?

From Peterborough its a fair old trek just to get to the border, perhaps a few days in south west Scotland (Dumfries & Galloway) to catch your breath before moving further north if that's your bag?

Thanks for replying, we will probably include Glasgow, Edinburgh, some lochs, Glencoe, so quite a decent trek up there.

In terms of your vehicle size, no real issues on most roads however you should acquaint yourself with the etiquette around single track roads (as an example https://www.scotlandinfo.eu/driving-single-track-roads-in-scotland/). 40' artics use a number of them.
On your specific topic of whisky have a look here for distilleries and their location https://www.visitscotland.com/see-do/food-drink/whisky/distilleries/
Are you sticking to the mainland or looking to include the islands?
Are you looking to stay on sites or wild camp?

About 6 hours from Peterborough to Edingburgh,,,Worth a stop at Berwick on Tweed on your way,,BUSBY.

Be careful, it’s a bit rough there, a load of drunks living on fried food and fighting each other in the streets...

I should know, I’m Peterborough born and bred.

:roflmto:
Best stop at the Showground, then ??

Thanks for your reply and helpful links. We will be sticking to the mainland and possibly some wild camping. Never done wild camping before, so would be a new adventure ?

Thanks for reply. I noticed on other threads that Dumfries and Galloway, has very good comments ?

Dumfries & Galloway is a stunning but, pretty much undiscovered corner of Scotland.
There are wild camping spots by the hundred not to mention plenty of campsites etc.
You can choose between coastal area's or the full mountains & lochs area's.
Parking is usually free pretty much everywhere & there are beautiful towns like Castle Douglas where there's a notable absence of the standard high street shops, places to eat are well worth visiting.

You'll need to work out which activities light your fire to plan exactly where you need to be.

What time of year do you plan on visiting?
