Hi all,
Ive got the older paper driving licence. Do I need an IDP with it or is a passport ID ok with it? Im a bit reluctant to change to Photo licence in case my C1 "disappears" in the paperwork at DVLA.

There must be Millions of photo licenses that have been issues and many of those exchanged for old one's or re-newals etc..
I cant really see the reason not to change, I use mine a lot as like an identity card to prove who I am when collecting parcels etc.
Yes, I have read a few horror stories including a Motorcycle Policeman who lost his classification to ride motorbikes,,
But few and far between.. Always copy anything you send away or do you even have to send it these days. Not sure maybe its just an online thing...

Did mine back in 2000 in preperation for visit to Australia and USA as I think photo license was needed at the time..
Good luck which ever way you go.. (y)

Paper one is OK if it is either the pink/ green or green Pink one with EU on it. May change after October.

Edit:
Should have said Pink.

I've just changed from paper to photo and my C1 didn't disappear(y)

I didn’t send my paper one back I told them I had lost it in case my bike licence disappeared.

Driving abroad on holiday
You need your Great Britain or Northern Ireland driving licence to drive abroad on holiday.

You can use:

If you’re hiring a car, the hire company may ask for a check code so they can view your driving record.

Check if you need an international driving permit (IDP)
You might also need an international driving permit (IDP) to drive in some non-EU countries. Check if you need an IDP.

Do not apply for an IDP if you’re moving abroad. You need to get a local driving licence instead.

I scanned my licence front and back before renewing, then had a copy if it had gone wrong

Why, when you have to renew incurring further costs if the paper one is still valid. I’m certainly keeping mine

If you changed in 2000 then you should be on your 2nd re-renewal as they only last ten years.

I know it is not expensive but I begrudge every "£" I give the government. Paper one lasts until you are 70. (y):D

Actually must have been 1999 !!!
Just checked and runs out 1/12/2019 so my 3rd one coming up.. It's only money....

I didn't send my paper licence anywhere. You can apply for the photo one online, and in my case, they used my passport photo for my licence as well

This is my favourite for sure:)
