A Woosh bang
Some years ago I dabbled with watercolours but never really got ahead with them.. crap if I were honest.. But I feel I can do better with oil, and having seen a few paintings on here would like some basic advice..

I have also watched quite a few youtube videos and read some forums but would really appreciate any advice, where to start, what equipment etc .. do's and don'ts

There is a local art club locally which I plan to attend next week..

please show your paintings and how you achieved the result..

so very much appreciated...

I dapple a bit but it’s usually two coats of emulsion on plaster and occasional oil on wood, normally white satin.
However I have tried oil on canvas but can anyone tell me how to stop the numbers showing through.

First painting in 20+ years, keeping my granddaughter company. Obviously watercolour, borrowed from granddaughter - mine had all dried up.

Use a pallet knife - much less mess and keeps application fresh

Keep limited colours

What matters: tone and perspective, not accurate colours.

Take care with shadows (must be all correct direction) and reflections (in water always directly under).

I paint from previously taken photos rather than live.

I don’t try to sell - they are just for family walls

Paint for yourself - don’t worry. The pleasure is in the mindfulness of really seeing an image - if you capture it the pleasure is double.

I paint in oils, outside mainly. I have a pochade box and a photographers tripod, I restrict myself to 10x8” max and give myself a time limit of 2 hours otherwise the light has changed and the scene is totally different. I carry far too much equipment. It would be best to restrict myself to 8 colours and a few brushes, but my self discipline is not very good. It is a messy pastime, but I love doing it. We have a van conversion and I find it’s not practical to do it inside. Here is a painting I did in Ile de Ré, France, this summer.
