Old ideas are best

Great idea seen on rear of a older model.I have never noticed this on any van before.A vertical channel on both sides of the rear at the strongest part rather than the centre.Allows any height position of horizontal bars for bike rack, etc.
Why do such good ideas discontinue ?

Our Burstner had a single horizontal top rail that the bike rack hooked in to.
