Returning to a motorhome.
We are taking our first outing proper in our new to us Autocruise Stardream to the Isle of Wight at the end of September. A bit late in the year, but living in Cornwall comes with the inevitable visits from family and friends looking for a cheap holiday and of course Cornwall's own activities for us. I don't know what the weather is likely to be like, but it can't get any wetter than Cornwall's autumn.
Does anyone have any knowledge of nice smaller sites and good places to see/eat? We are investing in two used electric bikes and a trailer for the dogs. Just started looking. It's not a very adventurous start, but it's a place I have never been to and Ireland is on the menu for next year, followed by a trip over the channel after that. Cheers John.

It’s a great place to go. I was born there! Mind you I left when I was six months old and have only ever been back once for a weeks holiday. So I’m probably not the best person to advise you🙂. Now Norfolk on the other hand…..

The Portsmouth Wootton route takes you into the LEZ as well if you are old and smelly.
So, if that doesn't 'float your boat' (sorry) you can use the Lymington-Yarmouth route without worrying about Portsmouth.

Good Evening

Not adventurous????

The adventure starts as soon as you drive away, regardless of how far you go! The change of scenery and lifestyle is more important than the distance. We haven’t been further than 50 miles from home since we got our motorhome in September last year but love every small trip we can squeeze in. Just picked up motorhome from storage and on drive ready for four nights out only 30 mins away!
Looking forward to a biggie in September, all the way to Whitby and North Yorkshire!

Phil in Northampton

Do you need a compass? if you do 30 weekends away at 50 miles thats 3000 miles a year some drive 1500 miles park for 160 days and drive back everyone uses their van differently
I could not have mine in storage or I would not travel anywhere near as I do anyone who can do the go storage pick it up load it up go away , unpack it return it to storage
Getting it in and out is an adventure in its self if you ask me (y)

I went to the Isle of Wight, it was great, there’s not a lot to do, it’s mainly beach a few historical buildings, but one thing they do great at is pubs, yes there’s lots and the beer is great, also their fish and chips is good and muscles in white wine too. There’s folk music in some pubs. A trip around the not so busy lanes on your bike is a great way to entertain yourself, if you can scuba, there are plenty of places to dive. I suggest you search “what to do on the Isle of Wight” I’m sure you will find lots of suggestions, the camp sites are kid friendly and most have pools and club houses. Have a great time. Next do try France, if you can get across the water, La Rochelle, St Jean De Luz, Sete, Salbris and Millau gorges. There are cheap camping sites and thousands of Aires. If you can, buy the book, “All the Aires in France” you can go from Aire to Aire. Also before you come back, do go to Ambleteuse near Calais. Great place. Also Chartres is fantastic, but hey it’s a big country. You’ll never get bored.

Stayed on several sites albeit not for a few year. The favourite was always The Orchards if it's still going.

What is the LEZ?

We are a bit old, but not very smelly!

Are there small sites, tucked out of the way, or do any of the pubs offer overnight stays? How about free spots? Are they strict about overnighting in car parks, laybys etc?

I'm not certain if it applies to motorhomes but I'm fairly certain that caravans have to have a pre-booked site. No wild camping I suspect. I've only ever stayed at the Island in my yacht when I had it.

Excellent advice. Not been myself but in laws go over on some form of package deal with them and they are tighter than me or the wife !
