Looking for some advice which route to take....
Sat nav is suggesting 2x routes.
Route 1 is A49/A483/A40
Route 2 is A496/A458/A487.

Which is the better road for travelling (dual carriageway)?

I can’t advise you of the best route to take but when we were kids we used to travel from Saddleworth to Tenby for our holidays.
As usual my dad traveled overnight whilst my sisters were asleep. It seemed a very long journey in a mk1 Cortina estate.

Route 1 appears to be diagonally across the middle of Wales, Route 2 takes a wider line down the west coast of Wales. I don't know which is easier to drive and if there is any dual carriage way. Taran_Las may be able to help.

If you want to be sure of dual carriage way then M6/M5/M50/A40/M4/A48 would give you probably 90% mway/dual carriage way. The downside is it is much longer.

I live in Tenby area and travel M4 regular. I would avoid it unless travelling late at night or early morning. The roadworks at the moment are horrendous.
Another route you could take is A49 to Hereford. A483/A470 to Brecon. Pick up A40 at Brecon. Follow to St Clears then pick up sign for Tenby.
A483 is not a good road unless your not in a hurry, it goes up and down with lots of bends.
Enjoy Tenby.

That is the route that I would use, one of the nicest drives in the UK from Lancashire/Cheshire, avoid motorways whenever possible unless travelling at night, this has it's own problems with roadworks and diversions.

Another possible is to leave the A49 at Leominster on the A44/A4112/A438 for Brecon.

No. 1 dual carriageway almost non-existent.
No. 2 dual carriageway almost non-existent.

I use either of the above routes (from Mold) in a 7.5m A class van, a left hooker and driven solo without any problem.

The coastal route(2) is enjoyable in good weather but consequently attracts more traffic.

The scenic route(1) is somewhat laborious becoming a nightmare should you encounter slow traffic. Passing is difficult at best.

Fortunately on both routes, most slow traffic is local. Allow yourself a minimum of 5 hours with a couple of short stops. If you like music this is one of those journey's which you could reacquaint yourself with some 'not listened to for a long time' albums.

As lunarman has suggested the only way to ensure dual/triple carriageway is to go via the motorway network. But be aware, the M4 is rarely a pleasure to drive.

Welcome to Wales. I hope you enjoy your stay.(y)

Motorways A40 to Monmouth Abergavenny then A465 heads of valleys rd. Now mostly dualed to neath then short hop on M4.
Check for state of gilwern to brynmawr section before trying to use occasionally closed on weekend.
100,000 trees felled for this short section of dualing
Ps M50 is my favourite motorway

Edit just checked open untill 3rd sept

Live in Tenby area. Family in N Manchester’s.
For years we have done motorways to Chester . Dual cartridge way to Wrexham then Oswestry , Welshpool, Newtown . Then to Rhayader via Llanidloes (avoid road to Llandrindod twisty ) then Builth wells , over the sugar loaf to Llandovery , Carmarthen , dual carriageway to St clears , Tenby .
Main roads all the way . Only real point to be aware of is Rhayader . Offset crossroad in middle and narrow road for 5o metres or so on the way out between buildings .
There are hills and odd sharp bend ( it is Wales ) but main roads that artics use to all doable .
(Only way for duel carriageway is via motorways ( but can become a car park !)
