Last year, when we renewed we had 5 years of NCD, but went with Highway, who appear not to give any credit for NCD. This year they have again given us the best quote, but if we go with them again we are likely to lose our NCD, after it has been lying dormant for 2 years. How many insurance companies are there like this? that do not look for an NCD. Will we have a choice of decent offers next year, when our NCD will probably be ignored by all?

Last year I got a decent price with safeguard who asked how many years NCD I had on my car, and then gave me an “introductory discount” whatever that is. This year Comfort didn’t even ask.

I suspect given Motorhomes are driven relatively infrequently, and you have to declare your previous 5 years of claims and convictions anyway, they’re not that bothered about the other 4 years (as most only go up to around 9 years total NCD)

if you don’t have a car with I’d be slightly more concerned?

! Comfort need a faq part of their website.
I can't find it on their website but - iirc - the policy for NCD with them (& likely with Highway) is they don't use NCD but will - in the event that you move - give a declaration that there's been continuous insurance.

Related, OP, is your 5 years NCD for a motorhome or a car that you still own after you bought a MH?
It could be relevant that you want to use NCD for two separate vehicles. Not sure.

The 5 year NCD is for a Motorhome. I own a car but it is insured in my wife’s name

To safeguard our NCD, we have always alternated who is first insured on the car - me one year with wife as named driver, then the reverse the following - keeps both NCD intact.

We only bought our first MH last week and insured via Comfort, they advised that they do not take NCD in to account so we will continue with alternating the car (and motorbike insurance when we purchase one) to keep the NCD valid just in case.

I have the full 9 years (Protected). When I changed Co`s 2019. They told ME I had 9 years!. It appears they ALL share (those sorts of) details. I have just had a letter from the M-H insurer (AXA) in which they state that Neither my NCD nor Excess, will be affected by the claim made last week when a Lady reversed out of a parking space into the (Parked) Motorhome!. THAT is now filed for future reference!!.

I am not normally cynical but once Highway knows they no longer have to compete with your NCD what is to stop them putting the premium up to the un-discounted level of other insurers.

It's just the premium that will increase next year. That's what they do.

Had that happen this year on the Toad, went away and found a better quote elsewhere. Direct Line beat them by almost £40. Two years ago, The CCC hiked the Motorhome premium, and the CC beat it hands down, Came in under all the Major players in the M-H stakes. The one who`s premiums stayed reasonably level for many years where the NFU who had insured My R-V`s since the 90`s. I am given to understand they stopped M-H insurance, But they continued to underwrite the R-V`s as being an existing client.

I think that we have resolved this with a quote, from what I consider to be an insurance company with better Reviews/feedback, who will use and add to our NCD, for about another £30 on the premium

BUT I had been renewing and had thereby been regarded as an Existing Client. So with that in mind and your info it is entirely possible that European Motorhomes are still being covered?.

I had protected no claims. But, I had a write off due to a car fire.

Renewal came, the premium on the replacement car rose by £200. For those who don't know, I run 5 cars, a van and the motorhome. When I now come to renew, I have to declare the claim. Result, premium increase.

I have now insured some cars in Spain. Saved a fortune and they are all insured for any driver 25-70 (with 2 years driving experience). You insure the car, no questions where it is parked day, or night etc. Providing the driver is legal etc.

I asked a German friend who specialises in car insurance to study the Policies. He advised me that the Spanish Policies offer comparable cover to anything in the UK.

One Car I got a quote for. Audi A3 Diesel. To Insure fully comp, in the UK with Us and our Family drivers was £2,000 with a £500 excess. I insured in Spain for €350 with €250 excess.

Not sure what Brexit will change mind
