Hi all,

We are due to pick up a "new to us" van next week, 2015 Carthago compactline. It has no oven and grill, just a 3 burner hob. We have been looking at perhaps buying a small electric mini oven and grill but thought we would seek some good ideas from other funsters.

Thanks all

A lot of folks say they don't need one, but we use ours all the time , especially the grill.
But I notice when I open this thread an advert comes up at the bottom from July in the classified section, doesn't say he's sold it(y):giggle:

Depends on how you use your van...? Always on EHU?
I'd probably develop a van cuisine that needed neither oven nor grill.
What do you want to bake or grill?
Plenty of options - the ramoska fans will be along later... omnia oven is another

We have similar . We have a grill but never use it and get on fine. Just cook what the rings allow. I wouldn't buy an electric oven as we don't have loads of spare space and probably spend more time off hook up than on. We do quite often use a single gas burner outside to cook on largely just for fun. I do use the oven a lot at home but on holiday we have a different lifestyle.

On our fourth van now and have opted for no oven after van two, we found we rarely used it and when we did it wasnā€™t that great. We now use a double skillet and we even do toast in it.

I've got a cheap Ā£30 Asda gas barbecue. Can only be used on a campsite and in good weather. Also have a double skillet for the hob.

We have a Remoska, a small table top Cadac, a real BBQ and two small gas burners for outside. This covers everything for us.

You don't need an oven and grill. We also have a gas burner toaster, it was dirt cheap and brilliant, oh and a gas top sandwich maker.

No oven in ours but we have a small microwave grill combi for when on EHU. I do toast in a dry heavy ribbed-base frying pan which I tend to use as a grill with bottom heat rather than top heat. We also have an electric (EHU required) pressure cooker and a small slow cooker. The slow cooker will work from the 12v via an inverter and will do all sorts of things including baked potatoes and "roasts".

Thanks guys, We tend to be on EHU mostly. We don't use the grill much but do use the oven for cooking chicken portions, or those part baked rolls on occasions. Thinking about it now I do wonder whether we need anything.....

You can do chicken portions and part baked rolls in a Remoska. And loads of other stuff.

Why not wait then - use the van, see if you really miss the oven.

For use on EHU consider a small combi microwave.

We were in the same situation as the OP a few years back. After a couple of British MHs with oven and microwave, we switched to a Carthago with no oven. No problem in the event - we have a Remoska inside, and a Weber Q1200 gas barbecue outside, which can function as an oven. Tbh, we miss the microwave more than the oven.

I rarely cook in the MH as I don't like washing up. I cook on an outside fire or BBQ (supplied by the state here at camping sites), baked potatoes in foil under the fire, eat off paper plates with wooden cutlery. And then burn plates and cutlery when I am finished.

I used a Cobb BBQ when I had a boat and you can roast a chicken, bake part baked rolls in a Cobb, just remembered those old days... Never been able to find a Cobb for sale up here otherwise I would buy one again.

We have a TecTower oven and grill, never use the grill because it's naff & the oven's main use is cooking par baked bread, it wouldn't be a great loss not having one.

Our Hymer has 3 burner hob...it can be 35Ā°c here in the summer, who in there right mind would light an oven and cook in the van in those conditions.... nobody I hope....but we might get the Cadac out and have a BBQ if there isn't a restaurant within walking distance......during the winter...one or two pan meals can produce the most delicious meals possible....how do I know this...well I've eaten a few that jumartoo had produced..others have too....

I hated the Cobb, so we sold it. It was so unreliable with the heat and very messy to clean. I'm sure you can still get one on Amazon.

I've got a VW Crafter conversion that only has a two burner hob and a microwave. The microwave is ok when on EHU, but not at any other time. I do have a Weber Baby Q which suits me just fine and I can highly recommend that. They are dear, but compact and versatile.
