Just read a article about Eurostar not running to Euro Disneyland.
In it was this piece of information.

New rules for visitors to the EU are due to come into force by the end of May next year.
The system will mean travellers from outside the bloc must have their fingerprints scanned and photograph taken, instead of having their passport manually stamped.

First time I have read this, could make the cross channel journey at peak times a bit more delayed than this year!

It should have been in force now but the EU have had some problems. It is based on the US system. You buy a visa for £7 I think, that lasts for 3 years. It is biometric so finger prints and face details are stored on the system. The press are milking it a bit trying to cause a problem where none exists. It should be quicker that the mayhem at Dover. The 90 day calculation will be done in a jiffy and there will be no need for a stamp. All electronic.

What if you don’t have fingers and are camera shy. 😂

Yes had heard about the visa scheme, but in the distant past. I assume you take your own finger print and photo, upload it, pay and get a 3 year visa?
Or as I with the USA one visit the embassy in London having booked a time slot and get a visa?

It will however require every traveller to leave their vehicle whether its two in a vehicle or a coach load.

Could make life interesting for those of us travelling with an EU state citizen spouse. Will we be automatically flagged up on the ‘system’ as overstayers when we exceed the 90/180 days?

How will this affect those travelling with their spouse who has say, an Irish passport and therefore avoiding the 90 day rule? Do they still need the visa?

But from a security point of view should if linked to the police database make it easy to easily identify people. I'd be in favour of similar here for visitors and residents

So hopefully all the illegal immigrants coming over in a rubber boats will be photograph and fingerprinted,

So we have guaranteed proof that they originated in France first, could be helpful for sending them back,

It depends whether the Irish passport holders primary place of residence is. If it is the Irish Republic, no. If it is the UK, yes.

I would have thought yes as they could travel alone or their spouse could return before them.

On the basis that even with all the planning these things invariably go wrong and l predict this will be no different it’s almost guaranteed.

Including the Rubber Boat illegals! The scuttlers through the Ports like Southampton however are lost.

Agreed - my comment was not intended as a criticism. Just that it is likely to add to port delays for a while at least.

We managed it before we joined (I can remember when all my Coach passengers had to file off the Coach and go through control with there passports in hand) without fuss, why should there be any now? (unless people want to, of course??)

Another benefit of brexit. First my blue passport (made in France) then the 90 day rule, then having to get passports stamped and then I get to spend 7 quid on a visa waiver thingy, and get out of my car/motorhome at the border to get my finger/face scanned. I'm giddy with excitement.

Can'ts see how it can be quicker when everyone will have to be exiting the vehicle?
On my exit from Dover a couple of weeks back from French border control/Uk border to check in was the total of less than 1 minute. Can't be quicker than that.:hi5:

Do you work for HSBC? that is there sort of reasoning:LOL: Who in his right mind would allow anyone to supply there own fingerprints?

Only Uk citizens , nor EU or Uk citizens resident abroad as it doesn't apply to them.

I think you'll find there has been a very significant increase in the numbers of people travelling in vehicles across the channel since 1973. We all know what will happen, it will be chaos.

The coach party is not the problem, as long as the driver gets priority, last off, first back.

The problem is the typical car load of say 4 people.

Car has to be parked somewhere.
All the people then need to be herded through passport control one by one, as they do in airports.
Then people allowed back into the car.
How do you then know everyone in that car has been checked ?

Simple do one car at a time,
all people out.
Check car is empty.
Check passports
Load back car
onto next car.

Each person takes say 30 seconds, plus 60 seconds of walk time between exit and entry to the car,
So permit a minimum of two mins for a couple in a car or 4 mins for a family.
Therefore each lane could deal with up to 50 cars per hour.

Per busy day Dover alone deals with 200 coaches, 8-10,000 lorries
The year round average of 32,000 people (many more in summer)

That means you need about 150 lanes for passport control.
There are currently 6 and maybe space for a couple more.

To see this in partial operation, go on a Stena ferry between Harwich and Hook of Holland.

They are not doing the exit car bit, but they are checking each and every vehicle and asking questions and checking each and every passport.

The ships start loading 3.5hrs before departure
It then takes 2hrs to off load each ship

With two departures each way each day, Stena have the time to do this on this route.
At Dover this would mean each ship could only do two runs each way per day (running 24x7)

How many ships would be needed to move 200 coaches, 8,000 lorries and 50,000 people if they can only do two departures a day ?

(Answer, about 25-30 ships. The port can take 7 at one time. You're gonna need a bigger port! )

Why is the processing of passengers going to take any longer than it currently does? Presumably the ETIAS will be a digital (scannable) document that is presented along with the passport and will take minimal extra time to validate?

I can remember that too. But at present, for whatever reason, there are long queues at Dover and the situation will not be helped by off-loading to be scanned.

My understanding is that the person is scanned / fingerprint checked - and the ETIAS documents are checked too.

oh dear here we go again with the brexit nonsense

Do you think there will be special lanes for us, or will we be stuck behind those doing photos and fingerprints?
