Hi all. Are there import charges now on bringing a new van from Germany? Want a left hooker

Thanks. Pat

No duty
Only charges involved in registration (same as before Brexit)

Extra 1% VAT to pay, possibly pay 20% and then claim 19 back from your dealer.

Last time I looked Germany appeared to have two tax rates 16% and 19%

I think 16% was to stimulate sales through COVID times but was limited and will be ended now, I might be wrong though.

When i bought from 🇩🇪 in late 2016, our 🇩🇪 dealer sold VAT free on the understanding / promise I sent the 🇬🇧 VAT receipt as soon as i had it, otherwise they would have been liable for VAT on the sale. I sent the 🇬🇧 NOVA VAT receipt by email a couple of days after export from 🇩🇪, import to 🇬🇧 and all was good 👍

I did exactly the same.

My dealer would not sell without the tax and it then took me ages to get it back from them even after a lot of chasing.
To make it worse the pound started to climb again so when changed back to pounds I took another hit☹️☹️

Dealer is duerrwang. Pretty big supplier.and bona fide hymer centre. They have offered vat free and 30 day insurance. Plus discount. Tried dealing with both big hymer dealers in UK. It was like they didn't want to sell me a van. Pretty amazing when u consider I am about to part with 140k.

Yes, the UK dealers are probably very cocky at the moment with good sales and a shortage of vans. Whats the price difference between the German and UK dealers please.

I can recommend Derrwang Reismobile in Dortmund:

Very helpful and happy to give very encouraging discounts to brits. They will drive it to Rotterdam for you to pick up and drive to Hull (if the north is your destination). You don't need to be registered to drive on private road of dock and carpark, but I insured mine using the VIN to cover possible damage. Then you just need to get it to your hard standing so you can register and tax it. We used the garage chap where we get our car serviced £50 he charged. VAT paid electronically.

Hope you get what you want.

We are the other side of Brexit now and not in the EU so the way I see it it should be the same as a when as a UK business we supplied goods outside the EU we Zero rated and the third country customs would charge at their own rate.

^ logically, that is how i would see it - as we are now outwith the EU, goods should be Zero Rated for VAT for Export.
I guess the issue is about ensuring they are exported ouside the EU (and getting a VAT paid receipt from HMRC) would do that.

You can’t pay the uk vat until the vehicle has been imported, so by rights the German vat can’t be refunded until proof of export has been provided.

If the German exporting dealer sends/takes the van direct to the port, or hands it over to a shipping agent to export to the UK, he sells it vat free in Germany, or any other country in the EU or beyond really. Vat at the UK rate becomes payable on import, or by defferement if the UK buyer is a business that imports stuff already or the buyer uses a UK shipping agent to handle it.

in the case mentioned above, the dealer is taking it to Rotterdam. So he doesn’t need to charge the vat as its a clear export.

You could always give Derrwang a call. +49 231 9411650. They speak good English and are happy to deal with brits.
HMRC VAT office is also very good on line 24 hours to clear. Derwwang repaid the 19% Vat by return. It helped that we have a Euros International bank account through Lloyds. It's the "persons" at DVLA who really got their claws into me. They understand English and Welsh only and the Fiat Base vehicle CoC was in Italian and the Carado conversion CoC was in german, so I had to get an English translation for the Dual Speedo in KPH & MPH, the UK rear fog light and the left dip headlights, which took them 6 weeks to approve.

Still it was easy apart from that. I'll be interested to know whether a dealer charges VAT post Brexit or not.

I'll get back mending the van fridge. Error code 8. Fuse, heater or control board (I bet I know which one it will be!!!)

We collected a new Hymer two weeks ago, ordered last October, from Durrwang at Dortmund. who sell 1000 Hymer p.a.
I believe ours was the first supplied export to UK with VAT free invoice. They are now set up for this.
We sent Durrwang in advance a speedo overlay produced by Lockwood Int.co.uk which they fitted before we collected.
Currently we are in the HMRC, VCA and DVLA paperwork loop but all seems to be going fine and each dept been very helpful.
Marcus at Durrwang looked after us very well (particularly after trying to buy from UK dealer).

Nice one it sounds excellent buying from there, we have imported twice from Germany, one new and one used, last one in 2018 used, but very straightforward

Excellent post - very useful info. Hoping to do the same at some point. Which model did you buy ?

I've been very disappointed with all the German dealers I contacted. If you can get yourself to Düsseldorf you will save yourself a lot of legwork. If you can't, let me know if you want any information as I will be there.

Durrwang are great, bought my NiBi from them in 2015. They gave me a zero rated invoice then as my wife and I had built such a rapport with Ulrich Durrwang. Interesting that they now have a legitimate export invoicing solution for the UK, that's a good indicator going forward.

Glad to hear all is well with Durrwang and reassured about the VAT issues being resolved.
