My compressor in my workshop give up on me today, on further examination, it appears the MSC give up as it fell to bits on removal.
it is marked up 250uf and 300 Vac, now I can find a 243-292 uf 240 Vac but not a 250uf -300VAC would the one I can find do the job?.

These are generally not critical. Don't forget there is quite a tolerance on these capacitors, as much as +/-10%. I would also assume 240VAc would be fine given what they are designed to do, i.e. be placed across a mains supply.

cheers for that does it matter which way the wires go as the new one comes unwired.

Motor starting capacitors are non-polarized, AC devices. It doesn't matter which way you connect the wires. The voltage is more important. Start capacitors should be ~1.5 times the line voltage of the motor.
