On a more serious note the usual ones have two probes which you press into the walls. But the Mk 1 eyeballs and nose can also be used. Look for stains and the smell of dampness.

I have both intrusive and non intrusive damp meters both checked and compared with very expensive professional versions. They were al within 2% of each other.
Pronged version does not have to make holes to work but is best used where damp is actually suspected or visable, price
