Phone in on the Jeremy Vine programme discussing inadvertent connection to the ferry satellite system, Brittany Ferries in particular. We had it happen on Irish Ferries to Rosslare in August. A £60 charge appeared on my wife’s bill. Three were eventually persuaded to cancel it.

Ferry casts off we put our mobiles, and tablets straight into flight mode. At £60 it is bad, but I have heard of a lot higher charges than that. Well done for getting something out of 3 though.

Why don't people put a limit on their phone account. I've got a limit of £10. The one on Jeremy Vine was about £2000 why would anyone have a limit as high as that presumably they hadn't bothered to set a limit

That’s the way to do it, both our phones are set at £2.50 .

always set ours to no roaming when on ferries as if not nothing stopping it connecting to the ships mast or airplane mode as that will also work and can then turn back on the wifi

You don't have to leave the country, we were in Folkestone and my phone connected to a French network.

Bizarrely my phone connected to it's normal 02 network whilst sat in queue in 2021 at dunkirk to return to dover ,weather conditions must be the cause.

Or you can be sailing along in EU waters enjoying the Greek sunshine whilst your pesky mobile is connecting you to a non-EU 'phone mast in Turkey . . . .

Set a low limit, that's the best way.

At some point on our last crossing my wife‘s phone was classified as being in international waters or whatever they call it and was charged by ID mobile. I always assumed we would go from UK to EU coverage.

I think the national limits are usually set at 12 miles so on the western channel crossings the bit in the middle is international water.

Article in this weeks Sunday Times. Wonder if he's a Funster
