Looking for 1st MH
Hi all,
Am looking for 1st MH.
Is 60,000 miles on clock a lot for a petrol MH?
Priced at around 16+K.
Would really appreciate your advice.
Many thanks Guys

Depends on its age. On a pretty old motorhome much less could indicate it's at risk of issues due to underuse. Things wear out even if hardly any miles are done I have a 1995 mini only done 21k the seals still perish and fuel lines etc it would probably be in better condition if it had done 60k miles but be worth less!

That’s 3k a year which is about average or just below for a Motorhome

I’d be more concerned on the state of the habitation side, what make and model is it?

There is a term we use and that is if it smells like the inside of a Hamster Cage.... Best Avoid

Thanks for your help/advice.
£16+k is a lot to me and I am a bit worried that it would depreciate a lot (being petrol and already having 60,000 on clock)when I decide to sell and upgrade in the future.
What are your thoughts?

If it's in good condition I doubt depreciation is going to be a major concern unless all motorhome prices drop. But I would expect a fair amount of continuing expense on repairs I wouldn't buy a 20 year old car and not expect ongoing repair bills.

I'm guessing it'll be pretty thirsty being a petrol.
Personally I wouldn't have a petrol but maybe that's just me ?

Depends on how you are going to use it.

My present van 23yrs old with 161000klm on the clock
And 2989 klms into this trip
2.8tdi ducato. (OK not petrol)

Had some horrendous hill ascent and decent hairpins through notheren portugal. The long gradual hills back into Spain, and 41° in the cab at times
'obby' took it all in its stride.

And more to come on the way back up through France

But (always a but) prior to the trip knowing where we were heading, in went a new clutch, cambelt, brakes pads and shoes. And full service.

Being a mehanic (in another life) I carry spares and get you by tools.

AGE is just a number if it's looked after and you are prepared to upkeep regularly it will hold its price or even a profit when you come to sell.

And I should /will say worth every penny, with the fantastic scenary along the way and the people met

Petrol wouldn't put me off if it runs well. I'm off diesels with their particle filters, electronics, recycling valve (or whatever it is) and pig urine... the regulations have ruined them.

The main reason I like older vehicles no ecu to throw up unnecessary codes on a whim

Motorhomes are built on commercial chassis and engines which are designed for high mileages. They do not like being left standing for long periods.

We have done over 42,000 miles in 6.5 years in ours and it would have been probably 12 to 20k more but for Covid. If anything I would think the mileage is a bit low for my liking. Probably standing for 6 months each year and only short runs.

I'd be looking at rust on the chassis and cab, damp in the rear, and issues with the mechanicals.

Check the water is it clear no mayonnaise?

Check for oil leaks, is the oil nice honey colour or very black?

Check for wiring has any bodged it.

Check the plugs / leads / dizzy cap are they cracking?

Check the tyres are they decent make and matching?

Check MOT and advisories?

Etc etc.

Very low mileage check it very carefully as its probably spent a lot of its life standing around, which is far more problematic than using it.
Ours is 5 years old and done 35k but that is low due to Covid.

16k is a lot to spend on a 20 yearold vehicle. They are going for crazy money at the moment and you might find in 5 years time when that is a 25 year old vehicle the market could have gone back to normal and it could be worth a lot less. I'd be concerned about rust and if any welding is needing done. Have a look online at previous MOTs and if anything serious has been done or advised.
