Hi all we are having solar panels on our garage roof they are 1776 x 1052. They are inclined at 35 degrees facing due south. Given the mounting rack Is 75mm off the ground can anyone tell me what the height from the garage roof will be at the top end. They will be in portrait layout.
 
 
In terms of mathematics, the vertical height is the slope measurement (hypotenuse) x the sine of the angle.

1776 x sin(35) = 1019mm.

Plus the 75mm gives you 1019 + 75 = 1094mm.

If you want to check your calculator is working in degrees, not radians, then sin(30) should be 0.5 exactly. If you get a different answer, the units are wrong, they are in radians, or perhaps grads.

The answer you’re looking for is 1.1m, derived from:

Hypotenuse x Sine 35 degrees

1776 x 0.574 = 1018

Add 75mm for mount height = 1093mm

I don't think given you haven't specified which way around they are oriented the calculation is possible.

Don’t worry folks, I have summoned reinforcements in the shape of Chris Mr Chrysalis. He’s bound to know.

Why not get a stick at the length of the panel ,get up there with a tape measure and measure it.
 
In fact you could even do it on the ground.
 
Ah yes, the S O/H C A/H T O/A reminded me of helping a mate build his conservatory roof. He’d built the little wall and windows to gutter height in the usual kind of half hexagon layout. Come help me please……. So I turned up with a calculator and pencil and paper. “Cut that at 42.5 degrees and length of 2.173m” etc.

He cut them all to fit perfectly……,

I did state they would be in portrait position as in the short end along the bottom, many thanks foryour replies. It’s still going through planning so the panels are not here yet. They say everyone should try and go green. But £71 for the council to tell me I needed planning, £275 for structural engineers report to prove the garage flat roof would be strong enough to take the weight. Sent it in they replied not needed they rely on the competency of the installer to confirm the roof is ok. But on their website it state structual engineers report is required. First plans rejected more details so £470 for professional drawings.
£456 fee to apply to the council nearly £1300 to go green let alone the £10600 cost. 4 kWh solar 6.2 kWh battery.

I assume that Keith has explained my consultancy fees and his own 10% commission for collecting it as my agent.
I think a picture will help so we all understand the problem. I assume that by “ground” you mean a flat garage roof. I also assume that the panels are 50mm thick, and the 75mm is the measurement from the garage roof to the bottom corner of the panel itself

In that case, the uppermost point will be at 75mm+X+Y where
X=1776sin35
Y=50cos35

So 75 + 1018 + 41 = 1134mm

I always thought the installers did this for you.
 
I have had 5 different quotes all of them said we don’t need planning permission but our council said we did as they will project above the roof line by more than 100 mm. But one of the quotes stated that if it was discovered after installation that PP was required there would be no refunds.
