We got £899.02 refund and a higher tax code. Best to ring them just have both your NI numbers don’t need anything else. They don’t ask about savings etc. I am well pleased??????????????

Apparently it only works if ...
- one of you pays basic rate (not applicable if you earn higher rate)
- the other doesn’t pay tax

Nope if one of you pays tax and the other does not, you can transfer £1250 tax allowance. See gov.uk

We have been doing this for a few years but with retirment things have changed, so will be looking to reverse this. I belive it can be done on-line.

You can also apply for the marriage allowance online which is how I did it.

you can use this allowance even when retired as in if one of you only gets basic pension its no where near your full tax allowance so if other partner has a works pension as well as state this may take them over their tax allowance and the other partner can transfer what their not using think you can only back date one year if i remember rightly

Been claiming this for years after seeing it on Martin Lewis's site. But it only works if you are a standard rate tax payer, unless, you put the extra income into a pension fund. I did this last year and still got the allowance. I called the tax people to claim the tax back on the pension contribution, as it can't be done online, and had it confirmed that I could keep the extra allowance.
