I suspect that I am not the only one on the forum to have discovered this but for those who wish to wander France and haven't here is a great resource for you...

The search works with place names, post codes and GPS decimal co-ordinates I don't know about with degree co-ords.

Thank you. A useful resource. It looks like there might be different layers. I got contour lines down to 1:25000 or thereabouts. Only lost them when I zoomed in to get road names and building outlines. Seems ideal for planning walks, having the IGN footpaths clearly marked in purple. One issue was the administrative boundary which looks a bit like a B road on an old OS map!

Yes there are contour lines at 20metre increments. If you can't see the different layers then click on 'Cartes' or Cards (if you've used an English translator) top left of screen then you will see the ability to use different layers of map information.
There are also various tools available on the right of the screen none of which I have tried to use, yet.

What a pity our OS don't provide such detail available to all FOC!

Geoportail is an interesting resource now. Clicking on the 'cartes' symbol reveals all sorts of fascinating information. I can see the name of my hamlet has changed several times since the 1700s, there are aerial pics back to the 1950s and, more recently, I can now overlay the house numbers of all the dwellings in the commune following the recent changes.
Much of my land was wooded in the past, now mainly meadows.
Keeps me amused for hours.... :giggle:
