Lots of you have contributed to the fundraiser for new loos and CDP at Elgol on Skye, and I thank you for that.

Now I'm asking for donations for the same sort of visitor facilities being built on the Scottish mainland west coast, just across the loch from Skye : "toilets at Traigh Beach and to build toilets, showers and a Campervan facilities in Mallaig" - Mallaig is the mainland ferry port for sailings to Armadale in the south of Skye.

So far, theRoad to the Isles Facilities Group has raised £4075 out of a request for £5000 so it's not such a great ask. Again this is an area really popular with motorhomers and campervanners and any facilities provided with be well used by our community. There have been lots of contributions from members of CAMpRA (the Campaign for Real Aires UK) and I think we could help bring this fundraising target to completion - to help protect areas like this :

If you feel you can help, this is the link to their GoFundMe page:

Thank you for reading, and I hope you can invest in this project and visit in the near future!

Great post thanks. There used to be shower facilities at the public toilets in Mallaig but a purpose made facility would be excellent.

Update for you

YESTERDAYby Jacqueline Mcdonell, Organizer
Although the country is back in lockdown we are hoping that it won't affect our plans too much. The concrete foundations have been poured and are ready for the Mallaig building to arrive. All being well, the sections should leave the factory on Monday 18th January. The photo below shows progress with the sections, but not the final cladding, which will be darker. They will take two days to travel up, and should be craned into place on Thursday 21st January. Then it will take around a fortnight to get everything in place and bolted together etc. If all goes to plan, we hope to have them open in time for Easter. We're keeping everything crossed, not only that the programme goes to plan, but that we are able to welcome back visitors to use the facilities by Easter! Watch this space....

There have been some times when we weren't sure that this day would actually come, but today the Mallaig toilet block has left the factory and is en-route to site! Let's hope the weather holds out for the journey, and more importantly for the crane to get them off on Wednesday! More photos to follow at the end of the week....

Hope the roads are better for them than here on Skye where we have black ice under snow.

Thanks for the update.
Is there a website to find out about other community organised facilities such as this in Scotland.

I don't think there's a specific one (other than Council planning pages) but CAMpRA is usually well on the ball. Facebook, Web page etc. It's a campaign group getting the ball rolling on an Aires-type network throughout the UK and is having quite a good bit of success.

Thanks for that. I have the CAMpRA website book marked and it is excellent in letting everyone know what is happening regards possible and new developments and the Gallery page is good as well. I was just hoping it was possible to search specific areas.

I suppose there might be something but I don't know of one.
There's a great resource covering West Harris.
There are good community facilities at Broadford, Gairloch, Kinlochbervie, Hawick and a few others.

Here's a sneak peak at the inside of the toilets - they are unisex, with 5 cubicles and (behind a wall) 4 urinals. The shower is fully accessible.
We are on a roll this week, and have also been awarded £8,000 from NatureScot's Better Places fund to investigate the feasibility of taking ownership of and extending the car park at Silver Sands. We have an estimate of £130k to do this and have applied for the maximum £100k from another fund towards this, but we're going to extend the target and keep the Go Fund Me open to contribute towards this new project!

Campercontact and Park4night are probably the most comprehensive, although you would have to look at individual entries to see if they are community run.

just a thought, wouldn't it be a really good idea if SfS and CC got involved in fundraising even by simply promoting contributions to schemes such as this through their website.

Just sent a donation-better late than never.
Happy days on Skye, fond memories of the little site watching the sheep cross the river each day at low water

Further news

25 MARCH 2021by Jacqueline Mcdonell, Organiser
We're delighted to share that we've been successful in securing £100k from the Coastal Communities Fund (run by Highland Council with funds from Crown Estate Scotland) for the extension of the beach car park at Tougal, overlooking the Silver Sands.
This will enable us to construct a 60 space car park adjacent to the current 18 space car park (subject to a lease of the land). Creating alternative parking will enable Highland Council to restrict parking on the congested B8008, which has caused so many access issues over the years. Our intention is to take ownership of the existing car park and toilet block, through a Community Asset Transfer later in the year and allow Motorhome parking within this, but not in the extension. The drawings are almost complete, ready to submit for planning permission so watch this space...

I'm a bit late to this thread, but following with interest. Do you have links / details about the above community facilities please?

Hi Kev
Yes CAMpRA's got a lot of info
Broadford - Camping Skye is community owned and managed, a full campsite that also allows "splash and dash" visits (ie empty & refill when not staying on site) https://campingskye.com/
Gairloch - has a black waste dump by the harbour office https://www.campercontact.com/en/united-kingdom/scotland/gairloch/18516/harbour
Kinlochbervie - Loch Clash Stopover https://klbcompany.wordpress.com/loch-clash-stopover/
Hawick - intending to also provide elsan etc https://www.google.com/search?q=haw...85596],[55.42299902268096,-2.79134413467144]]
