What would you do ?
Leaving my van for warranty work to be carried out I inadvertently left a set of my car keys instead of both sets of the van keys. Once home I realized and rang the company who said yes we have the keys but no we can't post them out to you, this I can understand. Rang again two weeks later to check and the warranty work was part completed and they still had the keys.
One month late and warranty work still not completed I collected the van and, no we don't have your keys and don't know you are talking about.

So, new key from Jaguar £750 plus vat plus work to code the new car to the car !!!!
Insurance claim max £450 pay the rest and my insurance will be "loaded" next time around.
Forget the key and probably sell the car next year with just the one.

Can I ask the panel, What would you do ?

Many thanks,
Norman.

Firstly I’d never have left my van all that time. Do you know who you were speaking to when they said they had your keys? Always ask who you are talking to.
Maybe you could speak to the manager in the hope they will have a more thorough look. If not I think your best to just get another key cut, if not coded so at least you have one should your main one get damaged. I wish you luck.

When I put my mh in for work (or any other vehicle) I only leave one set of keys. I cant see why they'd need both. I would get myself over to the workshop and demand they go through all their keys. Its your fault the car keys were left but an appearance in person may resolve it.

Oh no what a pain! I can't believe they point-blank denied it when you had spoken to them twice about the keys - I have occasionally kicked myself for not getting names in the past and now always try to get a name which makes it harder for them to wriggle out of things but realise the benefit of hindsight is a wonderful and painful thing. No bright ideas for you but much sympathy - I think I would tend towards selling the car with only one key - however I have no idea what difference that makes to the sale price of a car, especially a jaguar. I too always only leave one set of keys when any vehicle is in for work.

Obviously your decision whether you get a new key, but I would suggest that the "lost" key needs deleting from the car as soon as possible. The circumstances suggest that someone may have it and the information about where the car is normally kept, or at least where you live.

The round trip is 160 miles hence my leaving the keys until I collected the van, I have spoken personally to the girl I left the keys with and she denies it, my dealings so far with the company regarding the warranty work does not inspire me with confidence :(

Get a call recording app on your phone, helpfull in lots of situations, when getting advice, booking confirmations etc mine has helped me out twice only in the last week, one with technical instructions from Avtex, and with my takeaway I was certain I had ordered a Bhuna, but got the Vindaloo, the takeaway were right! senior alcohol fuelled moment. :)
Cheers
Ed

Not a motorhome dealership but I have a friend who works in the Complaints Department of an insurance company. He says that, in their office, they have a “wheel of misfortune “. When a customer calls with a complaint they look at the wheel and select a “name of their choice”. When the customer rings back and says “can I speak to Dave” ,or whoever, they are told that he is on leave.

The customer then retells their tale of woe to the new “name of choice”.

If they acknowledged that they had them and you have a way to prove it then they are totally responsible for replacing them, end of.

I have no "proof" other than my partner being able to confirm the details so a case of "she said she said" :(

No idea how Jaguar justify the cost of a replacement key, possibly because the name sounds posh !

How do they justify the price of the keys?

Like you, I don't agree with what they are charging but they don't need to justify it. Supply and demand.Who challenges Coca Cola when they sell a can of drink for greatly varying amounts that costs circa 7.5p to make.

Can you not get one from an independent source?

Ask about at all key cutting services, if they cannot cut and programme one for you they might know who can.

There's a chap in York who cut a spare key for us for one of our previous Smart ForTwo cars, it was a coded key so not something your local place can do as they need the encoding machine to be able to do it which costs a lot of money, details on the below thread:

Thanks for the information. Would it be possible to get a new door lock and key from a scrappy? Might work out cheaper

What would I do, take them to court over £450 thats what.. even if I didn't have any concrete proof and I lost, I'd just want to cause them a load of hassle. Chances are they would either suddenly find the keys or roll over and get it sorted themselves.

More importantly, you’ll need to get your Jag programmed to remove the lost key; otherwise it might not only be the key that is lost!

I had to do that with my Audi - when I picked it up nearly new, the onboard information system reported that there was 4 keys authorised for the vehicle - I had 3 of them, so I insisted that they reprogram to remove all but the physical keys I had.

I would have gone for the keys immediately.

do you not know that modern cars with keys encoded to the ecu and immobiliser have made that pretty much impossible?

Too late now I know - but download an app to your mobile that auto records all conversations on it. You can ask it to ignore calls to/from any regulars (family & friends) so the record of calls isn't full of rubbish. It will save the last 100 calls with the oldest being deleted once 100 is exceeded. You never know when it might be useful .................

Many thanks for this information as I live only 16 miles from York.
I had an almost immediate response from the companies MD after I e-mailed him so l will keep you all informed with what transpires.

And the insurance company will want to know that you have both keys in your possession if the vehicle does get stolen

I use 'call recorder ' by appliquato ( I think) works well ,automatic & free ,although professional version is dear by all accounts.
