Lidl Wine

Probably about right!!!

€1.75 is £1.51 at today’s mid-market exchange rate.
Assuming the wine is (say) 11.5% alcohol, the UK duty rate on a 75cl bottle (from 1/2/25) is £2.95.
Say the extra cost of importing is 50p (?), the total cost becomes £4.96……lets call it £5.
VAT is charged on this total at 20%, resulting in a cost to the consumer in the UK of £6.
However, I suspect Lidl’s operating costs in the UK are higher than in Spain/France (??? Higher minimum wage, Council Business rates, energy costs, increased employer’s NIC etc).
So it is easy to see why we might have to pay £7 or more for the same bottle.(n):(
Do you want to sort out my personal finances?

Is France the same as UK in that if you are retired, you do not pay social security contributions?

If so, it would seem that one could be better off in France, depending on how much one would pay in consumption tax.

Don’t know, but I am sure ChatGPT has an answer! Give it a go. (y)

We don't get ripped off. We pay less tax than the French overall. Much less. So, if a bottle of wine costs more, we get more money in our pockets to choose where we spend it. Much fairer system in my opinion.
That's a good point, often overlooked.
But I do drink a lot of wine...

Hi.
Correction to above post.. " Southern Comfort "...... NOT Drambuie ...... The blame lies in Argus beer having been taken .....

Hi cyberyacht:
Do you or anyone else remember " Eastenders drinks wharehouse Calais " Plenty of room to park, used to go in and fill up the bottom bunk in the cab with Beers wines etc. ( Liked the taste of German Riesling wine (( NOT enough to drink much ;) )) but it was refreshing.

£10 return, P&O Dover to Calais; quick trip to Eastenders to load as much booze as we could fit into the car 😏
Those were the days 😎

My brother would collect the ferry vouchers from The Daily Mail, Dover to Calais return same day for £1.
The last time we went on a booze cruise we drove to the Hover Port, handed the voucher over at the gate, then they gave us £1.
Each time we went it was over to EastEnders for wine beer & fags, then over to the large local shopping mall and find the Sainsburys Wine Store, spend all our saved up Sainsburys vouchers with a couple of cases of wine, they also had Sainsburys "Soft Red Table wine" in large 1/1.5 ltr clear plastic bottles for £1 each, tried a couple and ended up getting more each time we went.
My brother had a Citroen with air suspension, having removed the entire rear seat it provided a massive free cargo space which we loaded with beer & wines by the case & fresh Fish & cheeses. We on one occasion bought 9 cases of premium lager for £40 at Dover duty free, so we had 18 cases in the back before we got on the ferry.:giggle:
By the time we had overloaded loaded the Citroen with cases of beer & wine and spent what to us was a small fortune, we sat in the ferry queue at Calais waiting to board the return ferry and we had to smile, as all the big estate cars like the Volvo's and Ford Granada's of the day, were all looking overloaded as their rear ends were very squat, however the Citroen remained dead level to look at due to its air suspension rubber bump stops.:giggle:(y)

What I remember most was what a long day it was leaving the house at 4am 2 hours drive to dover, over to Calais and back then drive home arriving after 11PM, well knackered. Certainly would want to do that these days.

Yesterday bought a bottle of Spanish ‘Vine Yard’ Sauvignon Blanc from Lidl here in France at the extortionate price of 1,75 euro a bottle. Just finished it with lunch and was pleasantly surprised, better than a lot of local AOP wines.

As the wine is shown to be imported into the UK by Lidl GB, I was wondering how much it would cost over there? Certainly the cheapest bottle of wine I have bought in years. Cann’t even remember buying in Spain that cheap.
Sat here with a bottle now......£4.00, sometimes on a deal about £3.85. Somerset Lidl.
