1 year in and loving it
Hi, we are planning a 3 to 4 week trip to France/ Spain in February next year in our 7m MoHo, probably using the Portsmouth to St Malo Brittany Ferries route.

My wife does not travel well on ferries, so we are considering a late booking (say a week or so before actually travelling) to try and avoid the possibility of a rough crossing. What are folks experiences of booking late, especially on BF, in terms of availability and extra cost? Are there any tips and tricks to booking late that might be helpful when taking forecast weather conditions into consideration?

Thank you.

You can book now to get the best price and if you opt for the Flexible Ticket you can amend the reservation up until 4 hours of departure.

I have sent you details of my Club Voyage membership 'code' which will also give you a discount.

Off peak ferries are usually cheaper except half term week. However, our weather and sea state forecasts can be very wrong even over a couple of days. Do they do Flexi tickets meaning you can decide almost on the day subject to space? Be a lot dearer though I expect.

Personally I would avoid completely that time of year and take the tunnel, but that may not be an option for you.

Join Club Voyage, book using the flexi ticket option, get a discounted cabin and tuck the missus up to sleep through the rough stuff (if there is any). Depending on the day of the week you travel, I doubt demand will be at capacity so you could always just chance it with a late booking but over time, but Club Voyage will save money in the long term, even if you only do one ferry trip a year.

Depending on your starting point in the UK, the Dover crossing or even the tunnel would reduce the 'pain". Even Portsmouth/Caen would make the journey shorter and reduce the effect of rough weather which at that time of year has a higher degree of probability.

That time year you will strruggle with a Motorhome on a last minute booking
.
Drive down and make it part of the holiday. We use the Newhaven/Dieppe ferry still a 4 hour crossing but convienant for us as we live near Newhaven

we've travelled several times in tje winter. unless you live close to Portsmouth I would go tunnel because the weather's too unpredictable. if you live close to Portsmouth I would use Caen because its less likely to be cancelled and your not on it for as long. we like france but unless your very lucky it will be too cold to stop there so you will probably want to get south asap. also take plenty of water as a lot of aires will have no water available.

If she doesn’t travel well, sure fire cure, 2 Stureron15 2 Hours before boarding, full meal on boat and 1/2 bottle of wine, that will knock her out for 12 without any ill effects, works for me every time 👏👏

As cyberyacht has said Feb can be a dodgy month on any ferry crossing route even if the forecast looks good a week ahead.
If it's a really really critical issue perhaps you could drive the m/h on the ferry and pick up the missus from a cheapy flight (if there are still cheapy flights next year).
Obviously the only sure way to beat any weather is the tunnel and drive South.

Some great replies here folks, many thanks. I can definitely see a way forward now (whether it be tunnel or ferry)!
