every European flag flying proudly except the Union Jack!
Why would that be or have we missed something like as the original was destroyed in WW2 or was it the Merkel influence?

Have they changed the flags? They weren't previously the flags of European nations.

Unless something has changed, it used to be the flags of all the federal states. At least at the pointy end.
