Hi All

So Saturday morning I unlock the MoHo with the sterling remote as normal, get in put the Fiat key (pic below) in the ignition and turn the key to position one, the lock light and glow plug light goes out the fuel pump runs and the MoHo starts as normal so I pull forward and turn off and remove the key so I can load up. I then Load the moho for the off and then repeat the above and the lock light (pic below) and glow plug light stay on and the fuel pump does not run and the moho does not start (but will turn over). I thought I had just gone to fast with the start procedure (never had a problem before) so I tried a couple more times and it started, tried it again just in case and it started. So off we went and must have stopped and started it 10 times with no issues.

Came home yesterday and reversed onto our drive and just as I got to our parking place the lock light and the glow plug light came on and the van stalled (stopped running). No matter what I try now, the lock light and glow plug light will not go out and the fuel pump will not run.

Looking on line most seem to point to it being the chip in the key fob (pic below) but any ideas, pointers to try or help will be more than welcome.

Is there a get me home solution if it happens again when we are away from home, I think it was only by good luck that it happened as I parked on our drive.

Thanks in advance
Dave

I'd get yourself a spare key ASAP, if the old one is on its way out. Older Fiats often need £1000s to replace the ECU if you no longer have a working key, particularly if they use the feared "Red Key" system. If you don't have the red key to programme new immobilisers, you can often clone the existing immobiliser module. Also, some locksmiths claim to be able to reprogramme existing ECUs. You may not have the "Red Key" system, of course.

I don't think there is a battery in it as there are no buttons, I think there is just a chip in it that talks (or not!) to the ECU

There appears to be a screw fixing in it so probably some serviceable item within it. Would the chip not need power to talk to the ECU?

I can't see a screw fixing and I have tried (without too much force) to open it, but it doesn't seem to want to come apart and the small bit it does come apart I can't see a battery in it.

I'm going to take it to a local van key programming company later this afternoon so I'll let you know what they say

Or you might have some sort of electronic interference in that area?

No the chip doesn't as the transponder part, which is around the ignition barrel, has the power.

I did think that once as the alarm kept going off but only when it was parked on the drive!! I'll have to pull it forward and try it

Has anyone else got a Fiat Ducato key fob with no buttons, as I can't find one anywhere!!
Yes, and a Red Key, and we have had it cloned so only use the cloned copy and keep the red as the spare in case of such emergencies.
Fiat Ducato 2001 1.9 Turbo Diesel with fitted immobiliser and alarm.

Hi all, just to update, had key man out he thought it was the key ECU so fitted a SH one and no difference. I have been checking all fuse's and relays and found a half melted but not blown fuse in the location shown in the picture, does anyone know what these are for as the van has started.
Cheers Dave

Melted fuse is usually a poor connection in the holder.... Its overheating but, as in this case, its not going to blow.
Replace it and keep an eye on it for melting again.

Cheers, I have replaced it and tightened up the connectors I just don't know what they are for as they are the only ones not in the manual

if they are the 70 or 80A relays they would be for the glow plug & start system. So fuses would be to do with that
