I’m a newbie
Hi
Just bought our first MH & now looking to add a quality awning. I like the idea of being able to ‘driveaway’ without having to pack up chairs etc & so have been looking at the Kampa Motor Rally Air Pro driveaway. Does anyone have experience of one & are they stable enough when freestanding. Don’t want to lay out the thousand & odd price tag for it to blow away !! Also we had a 2016 Rally Pro Air for our caravan & it leaked from day one (Although Kampa insist it is condensation I know) Again I would be grateful for any advice

Will you really need an awning like that? Motorhomes are usually used differently to caravans, with more shorter stops in lots of different places rather than long stays in one place. Whilst most caravanners use a fixed awning, most motorhomers tend not to, just using a roll out sunshade instead.

One of the joys of motorhoming is just switching off the engine, putting on the handbrake and starting to relax without the awning arguments. Why not take a few trips first before deciding whether or not you will use an awning?

Each to his own. We normally don't bother but we are heading for Devon and Cornwall this year and using CL's. We plan to leave MH on site for a couple of weeks at a time so will be using an awning for first time. We bought a Kampa Air earlier in the year so should be fun and games getting it fitted. We do plan to take the car with us as well as we feel that it is probably the only way to see Devon and Cornwall. We tried it a few years ago and got a bit fed up not being able to park. Most of the CL's seem to be miles from anywhere which is why we are taking the car this time. Looked at hiring but the cost is astronomical. Seemed cheap to start with but then you have all the extra bits like Insurance, Windscreen Insurance, Breakdown Insurance etc.

I don’t have the Motor Rally, but have been using a Travel Pod Motion Air for the last couple of years and it’s superb while freestanding.
It literally takes seconds to attach and re-attach when driving off or coming back to it and I think the air tubes allow sufficient flexibility to make it very stable in strong winds. We had gale force winds one night and it was so windy that I detached it from the van and left it to its own devices, only re-attaching it the next day after the gales had subsided.
I can’t see that the Motor Rally would be any less stable while freestanding and if the drive away version had been available at the time, I would have bought one.

I don’t use, or even take the awning on every trip, but if I know I’m staying on a site for a few days or more, there are advantages to having it. For example, I spent my second Christmas away in the van and having that extra space for storing and airing wet kayak kit, as well as drying the dog off, is worth it.

Hi we have a vango drive away one that has inflated supports- easy to use and stable/ waterproof. Bought it as grandchildren getting bigger (?why?) and oldest one sleeps in it when we are lucky enough to have them , we use it as outside area on rare occasions we are staying in campsite. Have marked the peg places so we position it near to van on initial erection, easy to drive back to it and re fit.
