Just got a vpn

I'm actually in France at the moment and using my own private VPN connection back to the UK from my laptop. I'm able to watch BBC iPlayer no problem and get the BBC news web pages without adverts. I'm doing this while using a French Wifi that would otherwise be blocked by the BBC for iPlayer.

It's easy enough to find your router's current external IP address while you are at home using it. Just go to a website such as Broken Link Removed . However, you may not have a fixed ip address depending upon your contract with your ISP. You can either ask for a fixed ip address or use a service that will always allow you to find it out or subscribe to a dynamic DNS service. My DrayTek router comes with this free of charge so for example I can just ask to go to xxxxxx.drayddns.com and it causes my laptop's VPN connection to go to my home router wherever I am in the world (obviously I'm not telling you what xxxxxx is really otherwise you will all try to use it!)
I am not familiar with Sky's router so don't know if it can accept incoming VPN connections - it probably can't. But there are many routers out there that can and are not too difficult to configure.

Incidentally, I've learnt a couple of lessons now that I've been doing this for real.
1. It's important to ensure all traffic is routed via VPN. I had to tweek my MacBook settings to achieve this. Otherwise your traffic could still come via France instead.
2. You may well have an IP6 address as well as an IP4 address. At the moment my home router is passing my French IP6 address through to the BBC, but because my IP4 address is a UK one, I'm still accepted as being in the UK. I'll sort this out as soon as I'm back in case the BBC wake up to this anomaly and spot what's going on.
Thanks, I'll look into it.

Yes 3 from uk, no roaming charge, as in Europe.
Have you used more than12 gigs in a month and if so have you noticed any difference/ been cut off?

In our Go Roam in Europe destinations, you can use up to 12GB of your data allowance. Any usage over this fair use limit but within your allowance is subject to a surcharge. There are no fair use limits for calls made to standard landline or mobile numbers or texts sent within our Go Roam in Europe destinations, or back to the UK.

If you're on a plan with Unlimited data, you can use your device as a Personal Hotspot when roaming in the EU. If you're on an Essential plan, you can change your plan or buy an Add-on if you want to use your device as a Personal Hotspot.

Many broadcasters can now identify VPN users and take blocking action, so there's a very real danger that you could just be throwing money away if that's all you use it for.

The trick of setting up your own VPN is fine for those who know what they're doing, but it is 2021 not 1990, proxy servers are usually blocked and you have to maintain both a TV and internet connection in the UK to use it. In any case it is expensive, easily detected and not an option for those living overseas. (A proxy server usually uses different IP addresses for the incoming http request and the stream destination)

Accessing the BFBS/SSVC military satellite via dish/descrambler is dicey and expensive, as they change the codes every so often just to disconnect people pirating their service. It is also very limited in content. Usual price to set it up is around 200-250 euros.

Using a 100 euro firestick to view pirated content is illegal in just about every country in the world, and ISPs in different countries are pretty wise to it - in particular, Spain. Whilst I think the biggest risk to users is that they could be just wasting their money, it's worth looking at Broken Link Removed and the Broken Link Removed if you have any doubts re the risk you're running

Some people just want to freeload, so won't be prepared to pay anything for a reliable service, but will cough up for a dodgy VPN, though. Generally they get what they're prepared to pay for.

Some UK SIMS work here (and in Spain), but inclusive roaming data is uncertain in the future. My daughter gets a good service in Porto on ipad on an established business contract.

Having said all that, I find £1/week for all Freeview content streamed via transponder.tv a reasonable price to pay for a reliable Slingbox leasing service where I am in Portugal. It's got a lot more channels than others, and is far cheaper than any of the other options.

Still, you pay your money and you take your choice. Not really a subject for this forum, though

I would also find £1a week acceptable in Portugal.
What is a transponder TV, what is slingbox and how do I go about getting them.
Is this any more legal than my current system using a mixture of UK Sims and a VPN with a Portuguese SIM it would certainly be cheaper.

Have you enabled roaming? If not it won't work.
There’s another thread running at the moment about MiFi.

In all our years of travelling with a Smartphone we have never been able to access UK TV. Cyprus, Germany, Netherlands, France, Spain and Portugal. Our son and Daughter-in-law have lived in three of those countries and have never been able to access them either, using their UK Vodaphone contracts.

We’ve been with Tesco mobile, EE, Three and Smarty in our MiFi. All tell us we’re abroad and cannot access IPlayer, ITV Hub etc.

I know there are many on here that have no trouble accessing UK TV abroad, but we’ve never managed it. Always been denied. 🤷‍♂️
Roaming activated, no problem accessing the internet etc.

Slingbox may not be a good long term investment.

matamoros, I used the term Slingbox in its generic form, as there are loads of similar "placeshifting" alternatives

Transponder.tv is a streaming service provider that's been operating for about 4 years now, £1 a week. They offer a generic placeshifting service to people outside of the UK, no VPNs, intermediaries, dishes, etc. You do have to have a fairly decent internet connection, and you can try a free trial or one of one of their monthly plans.

All you have to do is see if they suit. We use them, mainly for the soaps, as do a couple on here (they told us about it) and at that price we found them pretty good.

I never have a problem getting iplayer, virgin go and other UK streaming services using my mifi or phone both with UK sim cards. However if I add Nord vpn it acts like a double negative and then nothing works.

As I said, my daughter uses her business EE SIMs in her ipad over in Porto, and she gets the iplayer and hub without problems

I think that EE go through a UK server, along with legitimate UK traffic, so they don't get blocked. I have EE over here, and I do get blocked. Strange.

Still, £1 a week is neither here nor there, so I use a service that works instead

By placeshifting I take you to mean that a UK internet service connection would be needed, not an option for us unfortunately.

matamoros No, you just go to their website, we use a Portuguese ISP (MEO). PM me if you have probs,

Like the Leonard Cohen reference.

As your permanently in Portugal can you not just get a satellite dish?
No, we're way outside the UK satellite footprint, and the only option would be pirating the BFBS network with a 200-250 euro dish/box and no guarantee it would still work in 3 months.

It cost less than a cup of coffee a week at the moment, so why bother?

Can’t say if it did slow down or not, we tend to move every day/two days so the issue for us, is about signal and strength of it.
however I did get close to the limit and of tv I did switch to the wife’s hotspot on EE.

ours is 85cm, Spain is a no no... unless your Arabic is up to scratch.... We normally lose it near Toulouse...
when I’m down south I retune to Intelsat and connect my Icecrypt decoder and can pick up the 5 Uk mainstream channels and sky news

We got iplayer all over France with our Firestick a few weeks ago,and were not using a vpn!

Slightly off topic, but can I watch Amazon Prime abroad?

Yes, completely unrestricted, but you have to sign in to .co.uk website not the .com one

On the firestick effort, as above, as long as you appreciate it's a seriously pirated service. Cost about £100 and liable to disappear as soon as Sky start legal action - just like its numerous predecessors.

No issues with mine also have the Disney one but nothing worth watching unless you are into Marvel stuff.

Bloody handy when your kids have all these apps and you can sponge off them😁😁

Me too, but their vpn only resolve to the Netherlands or the USA

The adblocker is good though, the rest is chrome engine rebadged

That's interesting but I don't really understand the workings. It just works well for me with no noticeable speed difference.
