To some this is probably old news, but my old and battered Tosh C50 Satellite is much faster than when it was new (many years ago). It's done
tens of thousands of miles unceremoniously stuffed in the top locker.

I replaced the SATA hard disk with a 500gb WD SSD disk (a solid state non mechanical hard disk). It took some courage, and I found it difficult sorting out free cloning software, which took much longer than I expected to clone, but eventually was easy. The physical replacement of the disk took only a few minutes. The research on the internet took the longest, but was worth it. You tube guided me on taking the cover off and actually refitting, but the machine was up and running in no time.

It is so fast to start up, even the internet is much quicker. I can't believe it, I was thinking in terms of £600 plus to replace the machine. But this upgrade cost only £54 including postage. And of course, with a solid state disk the power usage will be much less, previously I was surprised how much power it took from the leisure battery. This is not maybe the best place to post this, but I'm so elated, I wanted to tell someone. SWMBO is not interested!

On the power usage alone it should be interest to other moho users.

I did the same to my ageing DELL Inspiron SSD plus increased RAM... long lease of life. worth every penny.

Brilliant! I have the same laptop which is just used for storage now but it is painfully slow. However the screen failed so has a plug-in monitor and the DVD rom failed so has a plug-in. Probably not worth replacing anything else ?

Yes it is Janine............the whole laptop

And don't forget, if you have a Windows 7 Licenced machine you can still upgrade it to Windows 10 for free if your device is capable of running it. But do not attempt it unless you have backed everything up or even better cloned your hard drive with a new SSD.

I'm even thinking about renovating an even old laptop running Vista which takes ages even just to boot up, but is still occasionally useful. But there is no upgrade path to Windows 10 that I know of. Is there?

I've got a couple of even older desktop machines and old macs remaining from my previous business. I don't like throwing things out!

My old machines trace a line back to my Commodore 64 with plug in floppy disc drive that cost me obpver £700 back in 197?. Still in the loft.

dont think you'll be upgrading the commodore 64 somehow...

Replace all those bits and you have the modern equivalent of Trigger's broom!

Still have a Commodore Vic20, C64, Amiga 500 and 1500 in loft. waiting for a call from the museum or a collector. Keep telling the wife they will be worth something one day.

Check eBay, think you might be pleasantly sorted at the prices you see there!!

I fitted a new 1tb ssd in my 7 year old MacBook Pro and really noticed an increase in speed.
I keep all my photos on a separate hard drive but decided to transfer them onto a second 1tb ssd then fitted this to the Macbook too ( it fits in where the dvd drive went)
Everything is so much slicker now, it’s like a new MacBook, but with lots of storage.

See what you mean RubyOptics
Might be time to recover it from the attic, wonder if any of it still works?

I've still got 2 old ginormous ancient IBM's 20Mb and 40mb hard drives in the loft. Ran them a couple of years ago, what a wonderful sound firing up! that takes around a minute, black text on a green background and running basic.
