did my first boiler descale last week using the 5-1 white vinegar method , seemed to work a treat looking at the frothing white water coming out the taps - mind you one rinse wasnt enough ( unless you like vinegary tea) .

Anyway , a few years ago I said to my wife that we ought to use vinegar and water around the house as a general purpose cleaning method . “It’ll smell like a chip shop “ she said “it won’t work she said” . But when holly and Phil show case it on their show last week…..

The place is spotless , we are saving a fortune on cleaning products and if you like fish and chips … it’s a win win

I thought you were going to wax lyrical about one of my favourite bands, Vinegar Joe…….!

Anyway, I agree with you regarding the cleaning effects (and the cost savings!).

If you can be bothered could you tell me the process of doing this. I'm unsure of exactly how to carry out the task.

Failing that I can always ask fun bot

There’s a YouTube video but in summary

Started with a drained down system . Added 5l of vinegar , 25 l of fresh water , charged the water system as normal (‘ade sure the hot water taps ran) switched on the boiler for an hour , switched off , left solution in the system for 5 hours , ran in through all the taps (loads of fizzing white water ), filled up with fresh and rinsed that through as well . *should of rinsed again .

Found it

Used to go and watch Vinegar Joe when they regularly played at the old community centre in Luton back in the 70's
Elkie Brooks was a right raunchy mare back then before she became all sophisticated and respectable.
I taught he husband Trevor Jordan to fly a hang glider and met Elkie when she came with Trevor to look at buying a microlight that we were making at the time.
When chatting to Elkie, she defiantly did not want to talk about her Vinegar Joe days and we shall we say, her performance with the speaker columns at the gigs. 🤪

Swmbo swears by vinegar for cleaning windows. Using white vinegar in 5l bottles from Amazon smells less chipshop and much cheaper than Sarsons.
I now use citric acid rather than vinegar to decoke the motorhome boiler. Both work but the citric acid is easier to rinse out.

Did it every year with MH, we live in a hard water area so even the cold water gets scaled.

5ltr White vinegar into a half full (50ltr) water tank, run taps until you smell the vinegar, turn off taps and run the hot water for 30 mins, turn on the hot taps until it runs cold, then run the cold taps until the tank is empty, fresh 50 ltr or more water in tank and run taps until tasteless....
A bonus is that your grey tank gets a clean at the same time.

Same proportions ? Of citric acid to water ?

I use White vinegar quite a lot, descale kettle and the loo bowl and sink anywhere really where scale hides. Scale holds dirt and smell, specially in the loo bowl in MoHo.
Used it on the carpet when Pippa as a baby made a mistake.
Used it on a dog bed when a bit smelly and couldn’t wash it.
You can use it like Febreeze on clothing but you need to hang clothing outside for a while and not use too much!
Also found this haven't tried it yet but sounds good-

To clean plastic sink
1 Spray the entire sink with a white vinegar and water mixture, leave for a few minutes. Combine 1/4 cup of vinegar for every cup of water used in a spray bottle, and use a soft-bristle brush to gently scrub the sink. White vinegar will also disinfect the sink. Add baking soda to the mix for extra-tough stains, as the baking soda with vinegar will create a fizzy cleaning solution. Create a baking soda paste if desired for additional cleaning by combining three parts baking soda with one part water.

2 Rinse the sink with water and plug the drain. Squirt liquid dish soap into the sink -- use one to three squirts depending on the sink's size -- and fill the sink with hot water. Allow the soapy water to sit in the sink for a half hour to an hour to give the sink a nice, thorough cleaning.

3 Drain the sink. Go over it again if necessary with either soap or white vinegar to remove any persistent stains.

4 Polish the sink's faucet with a microfiber cloth.
Things You Will Need
  • White vinegar
  • Spray bottle
  • Soft-bristle brush
  • Baking soda
  • Liquid dish soap
  • Microfiber cloth
Tip

  • Squeeze fresh lemon juice onto stubborn stains and use a scrub brush to work the juice into the stain. The juice will bleach the stains and also work as a disinfectant.
  • Avoid hard-bristle brushes that can potentially scratch the sink surface.

Use vinegar and bicarbonate soda for cleaning your household sink drains works just as well as Mr Muscle.

Citric acid is what Truma recommend👍😊

A bit arbitrary. It comes in 1kg bags. Usually 1/2 to one bag in about 30l of water seems to work.
I fill a wateringcan with warm water, chuck in the full 1kg bag and stir, pour into empty fresh water tank and fill with clean water.
I drive around a bit then let it sit overnight. Run both taps into the grey tank then wash out residue a couple of times.

I am curious as to why the running of the water heater is required. Surely just soaking in the solution is sufficient.

Certainly when I descale our electric kettle, if I switch on the kettle with the citric acid solution in it, the heat speeds up the descaling action (fizzing), so logically the same will happen in the water heater on a MH.

Now that was a band, always good value for the 50p entrance fee. Or whatever it was. And Elke Brooks screaming and flapping her legs like a frog about to take off!

You guys made me look up Vinegar Joe with Elkie Brooks, she must have been on her best behaviour as she on tele on The Old Grey Whistle Test.
Have a look, pretty tame by todays standards, or does that mean expect more now.;)

You can get citric acid from a brewing supplies shop, (or online).
