SWMBO is considering Poland for next May's jaunt with the MoHo, but reading vairious blogs and looking at organized tours I'm wondering if it's really a MoHo friendly desitination?

We might be better served doing a weekend fly Walsaw break, and taking the MoHo to the italian lakes instead?

Do any funsters have any experiance in Poland, it seems like a long drive for some rough roads and unfriendly welcome.

worth a trip there has been a few threads on here , roads are improving , and no worse than Belgium !
Found them to be more friendly than the french :) Not masses of sites but enough , and I was having to find ones that would take 40ft RV shoppings ok even got M&S IIRC .

I have toured Poland extensively both this year and last year. They are wonderful people and helped me on two occasions one when I got stuck in a forest and they would not take a zloty for their troubles. The camp sites are not the best more like people's back gardens ! But I also stayed on a motorhome dealer near to Krakow for about a £5 with EHC .The cities are great and the country side fantastic. It's still relatively cheap and the history is great. The toll roads are very good as expected and the normal roads shocking and as I write this I am in Italy near to Roma and the roads are just as bad, Go for it You will love Poland.

We were pleasantly surprised by Poland a couple of years ago. We also stayed on the dealers site near Krakow, and even left our van there for 10 days to go trekking in the Tatras. It came to no harm!

We're thinking of going back next summer, but in the north, and extending a trip into Lithuania, Latvia, etc.

We spent about a month in Poland last summer.
We loved everything about it.
The places , the history, the people and the prices.
We pretty much used Camper contact and never had any problems finding stops.

Almost 20 years ago I did the coast road from Szczecin to Gdansk when returning from my summer fishing trip in Norway. There were plenty of campsites on that coast, but full of Germans taking advantage of cheep summer living. In those days there was little in the supermarkets but fuel was cheap. Roads were atrocious and in some places 10MPH was the maximum you could travel without destroying your vehicle. I would imagine things have changed since EU money has arrived though. It does get extremely hot in summer although very cold in winter. The area that I toured had a problem with mosquitoes, so bare that in mind.

I'm thinkng of May next year. Not interested in Auschwitz or Krakow but looking for UNESCO heritage or scenery. Maybe the Italian lakes is winning.

40 years under canvas: Motorhome 2016 To 2020
We've just come back from tour of Poland, organised by Crossings Motorhome Tours.

ended up doing 2,775 miles in just under a month seeing some lovely cities.

we found the scenery bit dull, particularly if you end up transiting from place to place on the motorways. It’s very flat, much like driving through the planes of Northern France.

other roads were of very varying quality, some of them resembling a patchwork of overfilled holes and certainly 40kph was plenty. Made opening the cupboards afterwards somewhat interesting.

there were significant levels of roadworks, worse than Belgium (and that took an hour to traverse Antwerp on the ring road) so expect hold ups.

speed limits for >3.5 ton are pretty low, 80kph on motorways/dual carriageway and 70 kph on normal roads. Hence it takes a long time to get anywhere but helps the MPG (we averaged 30.3 over the whole trip).

Polish drivers seem to regard speed limits as entirely optional, especially in 50kph limits in town, and “no overtaking” signs/solid lines are largely ignored. They tailgate, hop round, and cut back in on any overtaking manoeuvre but yet I still preferred their style to the UK aggression - the Polish style wasn’t aggressive, it’s just how they drive. Reputedly they are the most dangerous roads in the EU but we didn’t see any resulting carnage, unlike in Germany where we were held up by 2 or 3 accidents.

the cities were very pretty, but after seeing a few they do get a bit samey. Our tour recognised this so incorporated a tour along the Baltic coast for a few days which was refreshing.

very bike friendly with extensive cycle paths, especially on the Baltic coast.

we found it very cheap to eat out, so didn’t do much cooking. But of course it isn’t cheap for the locals...

the campsites we stayed on were generally very “continental“ so mostly grass pitches, packed in, and a variety of 3 and 2 pin sockets and power output. If you like C&MC style sites, then I guess you’d be in for a shock.

language wasn’t much of a barrier, English and German were widely spoken (as was Russian in the North but that didn’t help me!). However trying to get any meaning out of the written word was beyond us..

overall, we’re very glad we went and had a great time (I intend to put a tour thread together at some time, and a review of Crossings who were excellent - but we only got back Tuesday). we are also glad we did a semi organised trip as any stress about whether the sites were safe, the towns worth visiting etc was taken away.

a good test is whether we’d go back. Well, the jury is out on that but mainly because there’s so many other places we want to go. But we’d certainly consider a fly away weekend to Krakow or Warsaw.

The high level itinerary was:

Zeebrugge to Eindhoven

Eindhoven to Garbsen

Garbsen to Potsdam

Potsdam to Poznan (so no we’re in a Poland)

Poznan to Bolków

Bolkow to Krakow

Krakow to Warsaw

Warsaw to Touran

Touran to Gdansk

Gdansk to Mielno

Meilno to Miedzyzdroje

Miedzyzdroje to Magdeburg (so now back in Germany)

Magdeburg to Schuttorf

Schuttorf to Eindhoven

Eindhoven to Zeebrugge for ferry home.

I hope you are not suggesting that the Daily Mail still support the National Socialists. Ask Meghan.

We live in Poland and cannot add very much to the above.

If you use campsites there are quite a lot in the North but not many in the South.

However, if you like wildcamping there are lots of easy places. If you see info that widcamping is banned ignore it - I think that maybe it is still law that was made in Communist times and never repealed, but is ignored.

There are very few Polish-owned motorhomes and many of them are quite old, although in the 8 years I have been in Poland a few newer ones have appeared - maybe owned by Poles returning from the UK with savings. Our N&B 'A' Class stands out, which together with RHD prevents it from being a target for theft, not that theft is a real problem here.

For local trips we tend to go into Slowakia (100km) as the scenery is a bit more interesting than around Slaska. We have not been up North in the MH although Basia keeps trying to persuade me, but it is a long drive from us.
