If travelling through Europe do you have to have vignettes , etc or can you just pay tolls with a debit card ?

In some countries, Switzerland and Austria are the obvious ones, but elsewhere a credit card is all you need to use any toll motorways.

If you plan on doing a lot of travel on them a suitable tag makes things very convenient. Bip and Go would be a good starting point. https://www.bipandgo.com/en/

Get a CC that is fee free when abroad and always pay in local currency Santander used to do a good one but that has been discontinued to new customers but they are still out there I am led to believe

Yes I agree. A credit card is all you need to pay the tolls. Just don't do what I always do, bang the door on the machine, park too close so other half can't get the door open and wear trainers as you are up and down the step all the time on some of the motorways in France ;) I have lost a few flip flops in the past and that causes another row :giggler:

Not driving in flip flops I hope. You can be fined for that.

I think you can also pay online for a toll pass, so you can just drive through. I think your van registration is scanned at the toll booth and the barrier opens automatically. At least you could last time we went to France. Someone on here will know more about that or is that what vignettes is ??

I guess a Revolut card would achieve that

Have more than one card available, we use the Halifax Clarity card with no fees but on the odd occasion French toll booths have rejected our first card of choice. Currently in Spain and not had any issues.

It’s not that complicated but some things can make life easier.
Vignettes are needed for some (few) towns where they have environmental restrictions.
You will pay a small fee for a toll tag but it will enable rapid trouble free toll payment - some gates read the tag as you drive through at 30kph.
Beware payment with some debit cards which charge for each transaction.

Revolut is one,
Wise, Monzo, Currentsea, FairFX, Starling, Caxton are some of the others.

I recently spent an afternoon looking at all the pros and cons of each one and went with Starling.

A review is here
You need to read them all, as each one has issues that may affect the way you use your card.

The difficulty with toll booths is that the lanes are not wide enough to conveniently open cab doors, get out, use the machine to pay, get back in the cab and drive through, in a moho. Used to drive me bonkers. Same difficulty in shedloads of fuel stations where you have to pay at a kiosk, they aren't designed for either larger vehicles or smaller ones where the door windows aren't at the same level as the kiosk window either ...

Got a tag for my latest trip to France a few weeks ago, brilliant, it's a no brainer.

As DBK said Austria & Switzerland. You cannot pay in Slovenia anymore too & in Portugal some motorways need you to register a card and it collects from you automatically. There may be others
