ive fitted a 12/500W Victron Phenix PSW inverter - it doesn't have a user replacable fuse . (it is internal)
I've got 10mm2 cables (<1m run), peak power is 900W, continual power is 400W.

i guess good practice dictates i should fit an inline fuse on the positive power lead near the battery

what size of fuse? (900W/12v=75A) so is an 80A fuse adequate?

You need to size for the peak power draw. Data sheet shows peak output 900W. Also efficiency is about 90%. So actual peak use is around 900/0.9 = 1000W.

1000W @ 12V DC is about 83.3Amp, (battery fully charged is slightly higher voltage, so a slightly less amperage, and if you let your battery flatten, perhaps slightly more amperage. Normal current draw at the 400W load, plus an inefficiency factor is perhaps just over 40Amp.

Your 80Amp fuse may be on the limit and 100Amp fuse necessary, but that could depend if your appliances connected would need that peak startup. Note your 10mm cable (which is the max size of the terminals) would not normally be adequate for the Peak load, but also probably OK as Peak shouldn't be for any length of time for cables to overheat.

Just a note, the fuse is to protect the cable, not the inverter. So for a 10mm2, I would stick a 40A and don’t overload the inverter. Besides, the blow limit of the fuse is 1,6 times the nominal rating, that’s 64A for a 40A nominal. So plenty in there for normal operation.

The peak power is 700W and you need to allow for this surge. The internal fuse is 125A so your inline fuse needs to be less than this.

Peak power is 900w for the 12/500 inverter (it is 700W for the 12/375 model)
