I’ve been driving in France and Germany for the last couple of months and have twice followed very long diversions around a (supposedly) closed road (showing closed on Google as well as local signs). I noticed that local cars were carrying on and vehicles on the diversion route tended to be foreign plates, which got me thinking…
Next time I came across ‘road closed-diversion’ which would have been an extra 10 miles, I ignored it and carried on. Guess what? Temp lights and a contra flow but the road was open. Done it twice since and got through both times.
My guess is that where a lengthy detour would be involved, they keep the road open for locals who know to ignore the signs but try to divert the bulk of traffic away to avoid big queues.
It’s a bit of a game of chance but at the moment I seem to be winning!
