I have just driven from Pisa to Rome and I don’t think we have any fillings left! It’s supposed to be a motorway. I suppose all their money is being spent repairing bridges. Wish we’d come down the middle!

We were surprised to pay less than €10 to travel from Maggiore to Garda on the motorway. We started off on the non toll route, and it said we would be 4 hours 45 minutes. We travelled 2 miles on the non toll route, and quickly changed the sat nav to use tolls - the roads were so narrow and bad, ‘bugger the expense’ we thought! The time was cut to less than 2 hours and the roads were better.

Hope you enjoy Rome. Don’t forget to hide your money well!

Wait until you get to places like Apulia. The Pisa to Rome road is like glass by comparison.

There are poor roads wherever you go.
We are currently in Germany and had a detour to a camping shop.
The roads away from the autobahns were not great.
German motorways great in the dry but seem to hold water a lot in the rain in my limited experience of driving them.

Funnily enough we are with a little group including a Belgian couple and a couple where the wife is German. The Belgian couple are French Belgians and have explained the roads in Belgium. Apparently it’s all down to local govt and taxes, roads are paid for locally and French Belgians don’t like paying taxes so have rubbish roads whereas Dutch Belgians don’t mind so much and have good roads. Not EU money.
That’s why we notice the sudden deterioration in the North when we leave France heading East across the Belgian border.

Aren’t I sad, I’m waiting for the bus to go into Rome thought I’d enlighten anyone who was bored!

Our roads in Britain are not much better at the moment, in my opinion only.
Thanks

Not where I live
Try North Nottinghamshire.
Guaranteed to loosen your fillings.
Son in law hit a pothole , in the dark, with my pregnant daughter in the car plus my 2 youngest grandchildren, at low speed.
Ruptured his tyre completely on a 2 year old car, rendering it useless.
Photos taken with measurements of the “hole”, and claim now with Nottinghamshire County Council Highways via solicitor for cost of replacement and damage to cars suspension.
Lucky they were not injured and nothing was coming in the opposite direction.
And this was on an “A “ road.
Our roads up here are absolutely shocking in the North of the County, but surprisingly in the Southern affluent part, the roads there are in very good condition.
Probably got nothing to do with the County Council’s headquarters being in the Southern part 🤔!

Last week I was crossing the M4 at J17, and as I went across the roundabout in the dark and with it drizzling, I hit what must have been an enormous pothole, and the car nearly jumped into the air. Within 50 metres there were 2x cars on the side of the road with hazards on, and another 2 with hazards on in a layby 200 metres further on. I examined my wheels and tyres when I got home, and all seemed well. I'm thankful I was in an older car with steel wheels, without low profile tyres.

South from Naples to the bottom the roads are horrendous!

I believe Mr Chrysalis had a lot of damage from a pothole I believe.

Sadly it's not true as roads in East and West Sussex are just as bad. I think it's pretty much the same over most of the country. County councils and unitary authorities have been diverting their budgets for years to what they see as more important expenditure. Consequently the roads are now so bad that repairs are no longer viable and a great many need complete resurfacing which will costs billions.

No. The roads are horrendous near me just north of London. Belgium and every where else we’ve been recently is far better. Although I’m sure Northerners won’t believe it.

I was ONLY referring to the southern part of Nottinghamshire, not the South of theUK at all.
Have no idea what their roads are currently like, and certainly am not in any way interested in starting a North / South argument on any subject.
I am only commenting and opinionating on the area where I live, where I can observe with a fair amount of accuracy.
Cheers 😁

Going round Belgium a few years ago, some of the roads were awful. So bad that I was driving well under the speed limit to reduce risk of damage. I went back last summer and they'd done a lot of work. Even the roads around Antwerp were merely bad rather than atrocious.

I think a lot of roads in the UK are now in a much worse state. And it's not that we've got a few really bad bits, it that none of it is good quality tarmac anymore. Motorways should not have holes in that you could lose a cooking pot in.
And as you go down the chain, they become progressively worse. You should not have to move on to the other side of the road to avoid a pavement imperfection.

Stop building new roads and fix the ones we've got.

Just going off at a tangent but the whole of W Europe and its infrastructure seems to be degrading, Russia may of seen this and thought the time was ripe for expansion?
