Very little
Hi im looking for a suitable roof system to carry a 14 ft kayak, my 544 has the side bars, so was wanting crooss members or the J bars to fit, do any hymer folk have any advice please
Mark .

Anyone got info on max weight a B524 can handle on the roof?
I’m toying with the idea of a secure surfboard cage with a solar panel lid...

Mark - tried talking to Kari-Tek?

Last year we changed from our PVC to a Hymer coachbuilt and although our existing Karitek roofrack couldn't be moved across directly we invested in a new Karitek, couldn't be happier. To accommodate the Karitek we did have to get Travelworld to extend the Hyper roof rails to get the load in the right place on the roof.

Is the Hymer water ingress warranty still in play?

If so I would caution against a "good installer" bolting something on. Go back to a Hymer dealer and in exchange for your soul get them to fit roof rails. You can then either go to Karitek or fit crossbars yourself and do the dance of death on the van roof. If you are going down the Karitek route it would be worth speaking to them first as to where the roof rails should be fitted - not at the back as Hymer normally do!

The Hymer rails are fitted by them cutting a 8cm plug out of your roof at each fixing point, sikaflexing a solid mount it and then bolting the rack to these points, the plugs are then covered with a bit of plastic.

Our Hymer is a (mint!) 2004 so well out of warranty - still don’t fancy the rain getting in though!

Gotta be honest , i've never seen (eyes or photos) or even heard of any cross bars for a hymer , but that's not to say , there ent any . There have been a few post's regarding them in the past , but never with any clear lead's . I've got a 2000 , 584 , yes it has the side bars and a rear mounted ladder , but personally , i've never sourced any cross bars . I will say though , if your side bars are anything like mine , I would suspect the max loading would be quite light . My bars have what i guess is best described as a slide , to which i suspect the bars slide into , as opposed to sit on . Hardly a strong connection , but then if i remember correctly the roof itself will only take around 70 kilos anyway . I got around it , when i discovered my roof had tread plate , and as the only thing i carry up there is my hang glider , i just lay the glider on custom foam pads , strapped to the side bar . It travels well up there , but i still only do this for local or short trips when the glider is at maximum length (about 19 odd feet) . For longer road trips , i short pack the glider (10 and a half feet) and slide it inside the van .
If you have got to have cross bars , I would go custom . Maybe looking at the thule range of roof rack fittings for the side / cross bar connection . Any alloy bar would work as a cross tube , just keep it light

Thanks im working away from home at the moment but will be back in uk tomorrow so im gonae do something over the weekend as i have a few trips planned

Custom is exactly what Karitek do

they are not cheap but a lot cheaper than a strained back and physiotherapist

I am going to order one of these for our Hymer and have used them before on others vehicles I had two Thule longitudinal bars fitted the Karitek cross bars will fit straight in to these.

Quite , just not so good on the heart when yer given the bill .

Have to be honest , i do like them . I was looking to fit a set on a t4 , while back , only reason i didn't , was i never did get van . I couldn't find a good one and certainly wasn't gonna chance a early t5 . The van i eventually got , saved me summit in the region of 600 quid . Being lower , i could just slide the glider on by myself , so i fitted a gutter mounted system for less than 100 .

Cheap they most certainly are not , but they are however well made . With only a small amount of care , it would probably last for a good many years .
What of the future , well i had started to work on another system , working in much the same way as a boat davit . However recent developments have caused me , to have a rethink , and with the possibility of a change on the horizon , that along with several other project's has being put on indefinite hold for the time being , until i decide which path to follow .

I have a Kari-Tek on my van that I bought second hand. Works OK as long as it’s carefully set up and carefully slid into position. Not sure I’d want it on a Mo-ho though...
It would still need mounting onto some rails fitted to the van.
