Hi all... As those of you who have seen my other posts re teething issues shall we say with my newly acquired B694 and her batteries etc. My question is now trying to future proof it. Would any of you upgrade to a new split charger voltage sensor relay or leave as is...

It appears to be working but I can't find any positive connection from the main battery to the leisure ones. I can find no 50amp fuse near the engine battery or near the leisure ones. In fact, I can't work out how it is being charged at all but it is as I've checked it with multimeter.

My connundrum is this. If I don't know what wires are charging now, how do I disconnect the existing one before I fit the modern relay system. Or .... do I fit the VSR as well as the one I can't find and see what happens.'.. Or do I leave well alone.. All options open to me at the moment so fire away with any suggestions please. Thank you as always. ā¤

The standard Hymer split charge relay is inside the Elektroblock. If you look at the back of the EBL you will see 3 large cables connected to it. Leisure battery, starter battery & negative. The 50 amp fuse is by the starter battery positive.

From the standard setup with say batteries at 70% it will charge at around 25 amps to start with falling to 12-15 amps.
If you have Gel batteries and they are very low it will put about 40 amps into them at the start of charge.

many many years! since I was a kid
If the EBL is working as it should, then you should have no issues. But the relays built in do fail sometimes. They can be replaced by a specialist like www.apuljackengineering.co.uk

The main reason to use a voltage sensitive relay is to avoid running a D+ wire (from the alternator) to it. VSRs are fine in simple systems, charging a leisure battery from the engine alternator. In complex systems the voltage of the starter battery can be raised by the EHU charger and the solar charger, triggering the VSR, and things can get very confused.

The split charge relay in the Hymer is inside the EBL, and is controlled directly by the D+ wire. If you want to improve the system by adding a B2B (or Booster as Schaudt seem to call them) get one that can be controlled by the D+ wire, saves a lot of grief.

All brilliant tips thanks. Not sure I completely understand all but trust me, in the past few weeks my Hymer electrical wire knowledge is so much better so I'm sure going to swot up on your advice. Thanks again, and I think l will leave well alone for now.šŸ˜·šŸ‘šŸ‡«šŸ‡·
