Just replaced one of my 13Kg propane bottles...... £40.73 for a refill?????

It was £32.75 last time!

You are lucky our local Calor distribution center in Southampton it's £45.00 for a 13 kg Calor propane, its cheaper from GoOutdoors 400 yards up the road if you gave a discount card, but as Socal supply most of the other outlets round here their price is mostly echoed.

I’d expect to pay £35.50 for 13kg
That’s the price on Calor’s site.
My local Calor dealers have been the same price when I needed an exchange.

I hate Calor, years ago they changed the rules on cylinder exchange and tried to get another £70 out of me for the exchange cylinders. This was to change back to what I originally had that was free till they suddenly changed their rules.

Absolute rip off! I use Flogas if it isn’t refillable, many roofers and builders use them and much cheaper than Calor at most builders merchants.

Failing that the local taxi refillers round Birmingham do their own cylinders you can get.

Last time we got a bottle it was £25 if remember, but we have not brought any for about a couple of years as 18 months has been corona.

Just edited my post saving is more like £190/year.
We use about 150 Lt in a normal year, about £87 at current prices (58p/lt).
Is that factoring in the cost of having the system fitted or was it already on the van. We looked at alu gas it was about the £400 mark so for the amount we use it didn’t justify it, plus the bp garages near us have had it taken out so not worth it for us. It suits others but not financially for us.

I have opted for a "middle ground" and bought Safefill bottles.
Luckily i have an LPG station less than 2 miles away and so a 10kg / 19ltr refill costs me under £10.

There is the outlay for the bottles but my view is that each time I refill i am saving at least the same amount of cash and paying me back for the bottles. The bottles can be taken out and sold or moved to another van very easily.
I dont have to move the van off site to go get any refills.

The fixed system like gas it / gaslo is something i would consider if we were bigger consumers.

I have 2 x 14 kg Alugas (current cost £750 for DIY) my ones are on their 2nd van so been in use for 7 years, I think I blagged them on the deal with the last van.
The cost is not that important worth every penny to save lugging heavy cylinders about enables us to get gas in any country, we hardly ever use the van in the UK.

Cheshire gas round the corner from me prices up over the weekend from .58p to .63p per litre

Are you aware you can take it with you when/if you sell the van and just replace it with the previous calor gas.

An LPG system is for life not just for the current van.

But I would have to pay for it to be done, you don’t think I would be trusted with gas do you. Haha. Like I said we have not brought any for a couple of years and I bet we have enough for this very short season with out buying any more.

i will look to change in the future to a refillable system, but at the moment it is not worth it. Even non- COVID, we are limited to our trips away due to work commitments. We don’t use that much gas when away.
I have accumulated 2x 13Kg and 2x6 Kg cylinders over the years ( and can’t find the bottle rental agreements anywhere....)

I also use gas for our garden BBQ and Pizza Oven, so will always need a cylinder

So at the moment not cost effective to change until we get the time for longer trips overseas etc.

I just begrudge profiteering..

When buying a new van dealer will swap them over normally without charge.

We negotiated our system in with the overall deal for the van.

2 x 11kgs, auto changeover, exterior bbq point and exterior filler.

Really convenient to pull up at a pump and fill up. That was one of the main reasons for getting the system.

Another benefit of a safefill bottle, can be removed easily and used for BBQ etc. Just needs a screw in propane regulator. Very light as well compared to a calor bottle. (y)
