Do not, repeat NOT send your old licence with your application. There is a box to tick saying it’s lost. Use that. Licences have been known to come back with groups missing particularly motorcycle and C+E.
If you send your old licence you have no proof of ever having held these groups.

Your right about the missing groups, i recall the story of a police motorcyclist who had his back with no bike catagory !!

There are some (don’t know if your driving licence is one of them) documents where a photocopy isn’t acceptable.
I know of two police motorcyclists that had the same happen to them. One hadn’t sent his old licence and managed to miraculously find it thereby having proof. The other had sent his off and ended up retaking his test.
I’ve also been on driver CPC courses and heard drivers saying their truck entitlement was missing when licences returned.

Do it as early as possible i.e. as close as possible to 90 days allowed. As long as the application is received by them with more than 56 days remaining on the old license you do not need to provide a new photo and there is no fee to pay. You will not lose any time on the license, the new one then runs for 3 years from the original date of expiry.

They received my application on the 23/12/2020. On the 18/01/2021 their website showed my new C1+E license with an expiry date of 28/02/2024. A few days later the new license arrived. They received my application to up-plate my motorhome on 09/02/2021 and the website showed the new revenue weight on 24/02/2021. The log book arrived a few days later with the new revenue weight correct but with the wrong max. permissible mass. I raised this on their complaints/compliments system on 28/02/2021, on the 05/03/2021 I received an email apology which said a corrected V5C would be sent to me, it arrived a few days later.

I reckon the DVLA is turning their work round quite quickly at present.
