Hosepipe ban and motorhomes

Thames Water didn’t allow this last time. My Mum checked with them to see if she could fill her motorhome’s tank as she was about to go away in it and they said no, she couldn’t use her hose to fill it. When she said she was filling the van with water that she then wouldn’t be using at home, they still said no.
So, sadly, it’s not safe to assume that because Yorkshire Water have some sense, other water companies will do, too.
It would be great if TW would amend their view on this though!

I assume you can wash your motorhome during a hose pipe ban if you don’t use a hose?
You could also use one of these..

But why would you? You would achieve a better result with a bucket of hot soapy water and a microfibre cloth or sponge

It will be illegal to use your hosepipe to fill your van at home as using a hosepipe will be illegal by means of plugging it in. Campsites will come under some commercial rule so effected differently as per car washes (initially)

However, you could fill it with saucepans, watering cans, bottles, or a sieve spilling it as you do so...

That's the beauty of bonkers bat shit Britain 🇬🇧
In the South East Water areas that is NOT the case. You can still use a hosepipe to fill up your motorhome. From what I read earlier on in this post the same applies to some other areas.

isn't it stupid, can't use a hose pipe with a nozzle etc, but you can use multiple buckets full of water and throw it over whatever your washing. I dare say id only use the equivalent to 1 bucket if I used the hose pipe with nozzle.

What the water companies can ban with a temporary hosepipe ban is laid down in the Water Industry Act 1991, Section 76. It does not say that filling motorhome tanks for domestic purposes can be banned.

I've read that you can fill a pond if it has wildlife in it, and some authorities allow you to water food crops at home too, using a hose pipe. I fill our wildlife pond when needed, and then dunk the watering can in it to water any pots or food crops that need it. This removes excess nurtrients from the pond and feeds then to the plants, so a win win in my way of thinking. I don't normally water any other plants at all during normal weather - they either survive or not - only occasionally during excessive heat, and definitely don't water any grass.

So is Lincolnshire affected yet?

I got my MH roof and front/back done yesterday , just the sides in wetter weather tue/we'd 🤞

Depends on whether they want to class your motorhome as domestic recreational use in (f).

My tank is 120 litres. I've done it with a watering can in the summer heat. I'll use a hose whenever possible.
Can't remember the last time I filled the tank, one, sometimes two, watering cans a day does the job.

Also it is Interesting that while it specifically bans cleaning a boat it does not mention a caravan, with a hosepipe 😳😳

Not the case here in Cheshire. When the ban comes in, and it will. Along with many other LAs the ban is on connecting your hose to a tap.. nothing to do with what you are using it for.

Exceptions are for wild life ponds having sought permission, but dont take my word for it. Check with your own LA.. my wallet knows about this from a few years back, neighbours can be such grasses.

It isn't Britain that is bat shit bonkers. Just a small minority of its residents who persist in talking it down every chance they get.
So, are you saying that, being unable or not allowed to fill up your van with a hosepipe , but able to fill it with jugs isn't bonkers?

Nothing to do with talking this country down. Doesn't need me to do it, its in decline at an alarming rate and I can't wait to get out.

The view from your window must be very different to mine.

Water is necessary for life, if you live in your MoHo you can fill it with water, it would be like cutting your mains off to save water !

so maybe not so bat shit bonkers
Read my early reply..

Go check, dont think there's any harm in checking out for yourself, but I won't be getting another fine.

And we all know i dont live in my motorhome including my neighbour

You are allowed to fill it with a hosepipe.

You are allowed to fill it with a hosepipe.
Read my posts please.
I've clarified in the last hosepipe ban in Cheshire I was fined after being grassed up by my neighbour.

Yours might be different...

But mine wasn't

If I plumb my pressure washers directly to a water feed I can still wash my Moho (low pressure) ??
Yes you can, the ban when in force in our area as stated a few years back "forbid" the connecting of the hosepipe,

Clearly judging by the responses by those that know better and haven't had a fine, in some areas you can do what you like...

Although in Yorkshire currently, its a mild ban forbidding the use of certain elements and not a blanket ban on connecting a hosepipe...

Cannot speak for other water companies but Yorkshire Water allow you to fill up your van with a hose pipe
Taken from their website Q&A's

"Can I still fill the water tanks on my motor home with my hosepipe?

You can fill up your internal water tanks using a hosepipe at home or on a campsite provided that this water is for domestic use i.e. washing, cooking and flushing toilets. The hosepipe restrictions do not allow owners to wash the motorhome itself using a hosepipe."

That's great. You checked.

I comment and share my fine at the time and you all jump on me claiming I'm talking the proverbial.

I've clarified my experience within the comments,

Just seems a strange forum these days when people want to argue for no reason..

Message to funsters, remains the same.
Don't take my word for it.
Water companies have their own rules. In Yorkshire it states using a hosepipe for Domestic use.. i can see them using that in their analogy..

Others have very different rules...

Only a fool would take my word or that of anyone else's on a forum full of those that know everything from lithium to starlink to solving war in the middle east..
Check -
By the way my fine was fixed penalty £80 or rising up to 500 of i challenged and lost..

Enjoy your day, be raining tomorrow anyway and you'll be asking how to stop leaks in skylights...

All the water companies have the same rule. It's in statute and applies to them all. It's very clearly defined in law.
Flood and Water Management Act 2010.

Again. Read my last post on the subject? Why are you quoting me?

Why are you not quoting Tonks and his mum?

, No generally you cannot connect a hosepipe to mains water during a hosepipe ban. A hosepipe ban means you cannot use a hosepipe connected to a mains water supply for activities like watering your garden, washing your car, or filling paddling pools. However, you can still use a hosepipe if it's connected to a source other than mains water, such as a water butt, well, or borehole.

This above is where I fell foul

Nothing to do with what I was using it for..
You might just get a shitty agent like I had.... you might take it to a solicitor and win, you might not....

probably why Tonks mum was told no too..

And as I was informed by sww inspecter who came to see me after a busybody phoned in
If you have a shut off tap at the end of your hosepipe then it becomes an extension of you tap and so exempt for filling water tank for domestic use .
Not washing motorhome.
And unless there is a total ban.

47 years with a badge and I never knew that…😱 I knew it would be worth having my legs off someday…😆😉

I wasn't looking for an argument nor to contradict anyone. Merely pointing out that the rules are not different for anyone. They are the same for all water companies in England and Wales. The water companies do not make up the rules. The government do.

Believe me. I know what I am talking about here. It's the world I live in.

It really is. You ARE allowed to fill not just your van,but any recepticle for daily human use.
Sheesh.
