Hi newbie here Can anybody explain why someone would down weight a motorhome from 4000kg to 3850 tia mark

Did they want to fit suitable tyres that wouldn’t take the upper weight?

It’s the first I have ever heard of that. Makes no sense at all, tyres are the only reason I can think of but I am sure you would find some suitable rated ones for the upper weight.

Can you ask the previous owner?

They didn’t have a 4000kg weight limit where they lived did they?

There is no logical or legal reason why a previous owner would 'do' that action, (save for the reasons given above which would be so rare as to make it hardly likely it would have occurred.)

I would take a photo of the only!!! (emphasise) 'Plate' you have. I would 'Scan' the V5C in your possession. (DON'T, WHATEVER YOU DO, RETURN THE ACTUAL V5C). If you have official literature, say a Handbook, I would scan that part that shows the VIN No. and that part that shows your default weight. Send them a photo of the tyres. Take two or three with a 'marker' on them to show that you are zooming in to show it's the same tyre!

I would then send a letter to DVLA and point out to them the anomaly with your V5C.
In the letter, you could tell them that you believe that the anomaly was created when the vehicle was First Registered and their systems should show this. Tell them you would like it returning to it's 'Official' weight.

You have to appreciate that Swansea view any change from their record as an attempt to pull the wool over their eyes. You have to go through each of the documents you have in your possession to prove, point by point that it was their (Or Dealer's) mistake in the first place.

Dependant on the response, you can take it from there.

Better still a copy of the Certificate of Conformity, they will probably want the original before they do anything but as suggested start with copies, DVLA are notorious for losing stuff.
