Usually mean a turbo overboost, need to check the waist gate is opening freely and the boost actuator
Is working, check small pipe going too it isn’t split,

I bought 1991 Kontiki when it was just 18 months old and had the same problem. In fact I seem to recall it was quite a common problem at the time with a fair few articles in various magazines - all pre internet of course !
It turned out to be caused by sticking waste gate valves. Not difficult (or expensive) to fix. I think the main cause was vehicles that weren’t driven very often.
We bought our van from Don Amit’s and they had a mechanic who had developed some type of simple tool to just manually 'work' the waste gate until it freed off ! Never had any problems after that.
