Hi guys,

Newbie owner of an old lady called Dollie, I bought her only 3 weeks ago, from a well known dealership in Somerset. I drove off, excited about the Adventures I had planned for my Retirement. I had to drive over 300 miles, back to Suffolk, and it was torturous. (Peogut Boxer StarDream 2001)

Why? The gear box, was STIFF<CLUNCKED, and came out of gear mid drive, (M25, was frightening loosing speed, trying to get into 3rd gear, or down, when the traffic piled up behind me)!

I pulled into the Reading service station, and rang the dealer up, saying that at 66, I am finding it very difficult to change gears, and I had another 250 miles to go it alone. They were confident there was nothing wrong, as it had an MOT, and habitation check, but NOT a Full Service, which is what I thought it hard.

Dealership, says there was no problem, bringing it back from Cornwall ,and that as a WOMAN, who has been used to AUTOMATIC cars, for passed 40 years, I am finding it difficult to drive ? mmmmmm

My son in law who is a top Engineer, trained at Lotus, has driven it, and believes the Synchronisation of the Gear box, and Clutch are on the way out???

I have rang the Dealer up, and they have agreed ONLY for an ANALYTICAL TEST in a local garage, to see what is wrong with the vehicle, and the Warranty states that I have 6 months labour etc.

Now i am worried, that if the service garage finds a MAJOR FAULT, that I should return it, and get a FULL REFUND, but the dealership wont do a Full Service, only an analytical test on the gear box, which is very worrying for me,

The question is , " What should I do?, and what are my legal rights, after only 2 weeks of purchase ? I love Dollie, and do not want her to go back, but neither do I want to be travelling all around the UK and eventually Europe, with a Vehicle, that is not up to the job.

Maybe some reassurance, for a NEWBIE, lady who feels quite desperate, now guys please
Thanks Guys
Caroline

:welcomesign: I'd wait & see what the local garage has to say about it . If they condemn it saying it needs a clutch etc; then you can deal with the selling dealer from that position.

I would wait until you have had the report from the garage about the gearbox before getting it serviced in case you have to return the vehicle as unfit for purpose. Hope all goes well for you. (y)

Hi Caroline, I used to take my van to RH Turner in Brandon for a number of years when I lived in the area. They were excellent and very good value and would not do anything that they thought was unnecessary. Hope this helps.

Since 1964 Gosh that makes me feel old.
:ello: w2f Hope you get things resolved to your satisfaction very soon.
Please don't be put off by your experience with the dealer, but DO name them?

I run a 1995 Peugeot Kon-Tiki & it drives really well. In fact the lack of modern electronics is half the attraction for me.

Once you have your motorhome set up properly, you should have a lot of fun & pleasure from your purchase.

Don't be shy to ask questions, there is so much help, advice & assistance is available in abundance.

Robert.

L' Hobo , you live over that way, can you recommend a place?
There is a Fiat/Peugeot Professional Workshop in Bury St Edmunds (and another Independent I believe has been mentioned on here) but as I do all of my own service & maintenance and never used either, I am a bit reluctant to recommend, Sorry!

PS. Jaws was mentioning somewhere near Thetford that he has been using for a number of years, perhaps he could help?

PPS. I'm confused, she states that the van is booked in on 13th Jan (Post #7) but is still asking??

Hi Caroline
A good friend of mine had a similar problem with his Peugeot boxer van that was of a similar age to yours the problem turned out to be the cable that connects from the gear stick to the gearbox apparently water can drip onto the connection under the bonnet making the gears difficult to engage and the extra effort required to actually get the van into gear stretched the cables it was a fairly easy repair but I would suggest that you have the oil replaced in the gearbox as the dripping water under the bonnet can sometimes enter the gearbox
Your van looks really good and I know how good Autocruise van’s are having only just replaced my 2005 model
Good luck and keep us posted

The issues with the gearbox on your van are common, and sadly can be expensive
BUT
It is unlikely there is wear on the selector so chances are you can cure the stiffness with a good service to the linkages
I would get that looked at first
It does sound like you might have a synco ring gone and that will be expensive
my grandson recently had to pay nearly £3k for the same job on his Y2K Ducato with a 2.8ltr engine ( parts are made of unobtainium and unicorn horns ! )
We searched all over the UK and continent for a 2nd hand box but ended up having it rebuilt by a place in Peterborough

As an aside.....................

The dealer is being ( scuse French ) an arse
Having an MOT does not make the vehicle mechanically sound, it just means that at the time of the MOT steering, brakes, exhaust, lights and suspension were up to an acceptable level and there was no rot in places that are important
It really sounds like he is treating you badly.. Comments about your age and driving ability PLUS mentioning the MOT stinks to high heaven as far as I am concerned

You could well be correct but always worth trying the simple things first what I should of asked was how many miles the van has done and how many owners no need to worry Caroline until the van is inspected 👍
I agree with you that the supplying dealer is being totally out of order the van must surely have some warranty with it

Thank you guys, for all your suggestions, and positive vibes, about Dollie, and will give the suggestions to the Service Manager on the 13th. January, Apparently someone on this site, said, the complaint has come within the 90 day sale of invoice, and if the van is warranted UNSAFE to drive out of the garage, I am able to get my money back > Probably with a fight on my hand, which make me very nervous now. As all i want to do, is start my adventure with dollie, and meet you all on rallies, and travel the UK without too much problems with her, I am devasted and feel like i have now been taken for a ride, jsutr becuase i am a woman on her own ! mmmm But I am positive, and want it all to be sorted to start this adventure with my new M/H Fun friends

As mentioned with lack of use the gear linkage needs greasing sometimes and please also look up the 'windscreen scuttle modifications '.
