I'd guess one of the pipes has come adrift, can you get access from below or behind the tap?

the water is leaking out underneath the black seal even when the tap is off. are they easy to dismantle to have a look?

There might be a big nut under the basin if it's like ours.
Turn everything off, and take the big nut off underneath so the tap lifts up. You might see where it's coming from then 👍

What's behind the shower unit (outside) the shower room, is it a cupboard, wardrobe etc? When my basin tap leaked I cut an access hatch into the pipework through the side of the cutlery draw rather that pull everything apart.

Take the lever off the top, and then the dome cover, then it will show the big nut that tightens the cartridge inside the tap. Tighten this, if still leaks you either need new cartridge or tap.

You will be able to unscrew the grey part which will give access to the nut, the two pipes (hot/cold) will enter there. Normally a small pin keeps them in place, just pop that out and pipes will pull out.

Cartridge cost about £20 and readily available, just take photos as you’re taking it out as it will make it easier to put back in if not 100% sure what you’re doing. I had same issue on previous mh and took about an hour all in.
