Hi I have a small trailer that needs new bearings, no problem I thought, but when I had a look I found the wheel is complete with the hub. I undid the castellated nut and took out the washer but the hub did not want to move, I didn't want to hammer too hard until I know it should just come off. I think the trailer is very old I've not seen one without removable wheels before. Does anyone know if the hubs will come off with a good thump? Also the bearings look to be ball bearings not roller bearings, is that normal?

Any advice welcome, thanks

John

Trailers usually have taper roller bearings much like a car would but my Alko boat trailer has sealed for life bearings.
Like yours these can be hard to remove. The drum needs to be pulled off and the bearing comes with it. Once the drum is off it can be warmed so that the bearing can be driven out. The drum is warmed a little more to fit the new bearing.

You certainly got your moneys worth out of those bearings, mine were ok when I changed them.

So just a bit more force needed, I thought so but I was a bit reluctant to hit too hard, also I won't be able to use heat as the hubs are set into the wheels with the tyres still on. I think the bearings on my trailer are as bad as your ones.

Mine are boat trailer bearings so get dunked in sea water quite regularly. They are sealed for life but 'life' seems to be about a year.

The drums come off better with a large puller as you get a straight pull rather than a bash from a hammer on one side. They are a press fit in the drum and on the hub so no wiggle room.

No chance of using a puller as nothing to fix it to.
