Hi
First overnight before hull rotterdam crossing heading for Germany.
Tried to make a brew and the gas wont stay lit on our our large ring on the double burner.
The Small one will stay lit.

In the past just took the white cable off in the picture and reattached and it was OK.
Any advice gratefully received, dont want to cook with my hand on the knob for 6 weeks

Can you move the thermocouple up slightly so it is more in the flame?
Or, if you use the big ring more than the small one, swap the two thermocouples over if possible as a temporary fix?
Thermocouples can be easily changed, but you’re not really supposed to touch them if you’re not trained in gas appliances.

Are these easily available and changed?
Generic thermocouples can be had from the likes of screwfix/toolstation. I'm unsure if youll need a specific one. It could be something else though but normally if gas lights but doesn't stay on, its thermocouple.

Try slightly pulling the control knob off its shaft a little bit, this worked when we had the Autotrail Comanche and the dealer advised us this was a fix and it did 👍

Temporary fixed.
Gave the metal prong of the thermocouple a good sceape where it is in the flame and it seems to have resolved it.
All be it temporarily, we will see how we go on during our trip.
Thanks for the helpful replies.

Had a similar problem with a gas oven. Tip was pull the knob off, put a tiny bit of tin foil in the knob end and refit. Works fine now.
Do you know what this is supposed to do?

Why not? Sounds like fun………😂

Do you know what this is supposed to do?
Presumably, as you have to press the knob in to get gas to flow to ignite, it extends the pin just enough for gas to flow sufficiently to ignite and warm that thermocouple. All I know is the small foil solved the problem that I couldn't light / keep alight the oven which at the time was virtually new.

It’s more to do with ensuring you are pushing sufficiently to ensure the mechanism physically latches before the rear of the knob hits the panel behind it.
A bit like having to give a warped door a firm shove to get the lock to latch, but certainly a good tip worth trying.

That's good to hear. Of course it may re-occur so I'll keep my suggestions for one pot recipes in reserve. :)

Not a fix but can you swap the thermocouple between the 2 burners to test if the issue is the thermocouple?

Another maybe that may not be....

Is one of the flames nearest the thermocouple slightly diminished from normal due to a bit of muck where the gas comes out? That probs would be fixable with a pipe cleaner. Or since we're all so much healthier these days a teepee interdental brush... (Probaby the blue size.)

Watching. Sorry for your problem Prop (at least one ring works!) I hope one of the suggestions works for you. I would stop into a moho dealer/gargage en route - we have found continental dealer/sellers with workshops are really prepared to help those of us on the road - as opposed to some tooth-sucking UK dealers… (ours not included)!
Our 3 thermocouples and burners were replaced recently and one is just capricious - can never predict when it’s not going to play ball. It’s working fine today, so I’m not going to fiddle today. Happy to try the wedge behind the knob Kannon Fodda - but I won’t believe it until it works 😄

Hah! Useful pipe cleaners are now relegated to weirdo-arty-craft shops (if you’re lucky!). Interdental brush is a
great idea!! 👍

It appear to be a smev hob... We had a similar problem where it lit, but went out when you released the knob.
AFAIK these are a thermo-electric device , where the flame creates enough voltage to energise a small electromagnet, which holds the shut-off valve open. So look for problems with the cable (single wire) underneath being compromised... And clean the electrode that goes in the the flame. Condensation in there won't help, either

Sometimes the knob doesn't push the gas tap shaft far enough, packing the inside of the knob gives it a few millimetres extra

Cleaned the probe and it worked so good until the next tim.
Thanks you were bang on the money.

You should be able to get replacement thermocouple in Germany but quite often just cleaning it as you have done will fix it indefinitely.

If you allow a build up of 'crud' on the thermocouple, this build up can burn away the tip of the thermocouple and it will cease to function. Always worth giving them a quick clean every .now and again.
