I was waiting at a Bus Stop the other day, and, daring to walk from my 'heel' position, I came across this shrub. (approx 1.6mtrs in height)

Any ideas as to what it is?
I thought it might be a Hebe.

No idea Derek but it’s very colourful. I’d be interested if it was evergreen.

I have no idea, but I have some growing in my hedge. Stems up to 6ft tall with branches carrying inch plus spikes which are lethal.

I wait until the branches get about a foot long, then cut them off and scatter over my front garden to deter the cats.
Works a treat!

As Corporal Jones would say, "they don't like them up um you know" 😄

I thought mahonia at first but I think they have flower spikes and it has a glorious scent.
But then as you mentioned a hedge I thought berberis which was commonly used as a hedge when we were in Cornwall, keeps stock in/ out without the need for regular maintenance.

I know little of plants that one cannot eat, but I thought mine was some sort of gorse?
You know, the stuff that grows on heathland?

I so much as it was in flower, this week, I suppose it must be evergreen.
It was mature but whether or not it would be as hardy at altitude, hiding as it was behind a western facing sand dune in North Somerset.

Mahonia I think

But never seen it as a hedge before

It wasn't a hedge as such.
It was within a barrier of shrubs which in themselves were forming a hedge.
