Having only used our van once in winter , I was wondering how much gas do you use per day in deep winter for heating , water & cooking , outside temps around freezing point Or less

At new year I only got approximately 5 days out of my two 11kg refillable bottles, I do have a large van ( 8.6m X 3.3m )
Temp outside was between 3 & -4 degrees , the wife also likes temperatures of about 21deg ,

worked out about 9 litres a day

I put a new 13kg bottle on before we went away for New Year for four days and seven days this month and the bottle is just about empty.
We have the thermostat set at 20 and ours is a 8.7m van, but we do have lined curtains across the cab area

You’re not supposed to eat it are you?
Perhaps that’s where I’ve been going wrong.:giggle:;);)

We use a lot of LPG when away at Xmas & New year also, but I dont care so much, as I always get that warm feeling as I squirt in the LPG at a gas station, & recollect how much we spent on Calor refills, before getting the Gaslow refillable's. Hate to think how much they cost these days:eek:
I think the most spent at the pumps has been £18 to refill both tanks, a lot cheaper than heating the house eh?

I am looking for quantities of use per day as I’m going up north (scotland) for a week , not so sure it will last that long , looks like there’s no lpg refills available beyond Ullapool on the west & Dornoch on the east coast
I don’t want to carry a spare callor gas bottle unless absolutely necessary

my question is not about cost but quantity used , just don’t want to run out of gas , temps in the north of scotland can easily be -5 deg at that time of year

At least you have a rough idea of your daily usage at zero degrees being 9 litres a day, so you may have to plan dipping south in your itinerary, as we did to find an LPG station.
I no longer trust the LPG apps, unless there is very recent review, so I guess I dont have to advise to call ahead to make sure they still supply.
We ended up going onto to Skye then back over the bridge just to get a refill last April/May, I am not even sure if the CO-OP Garage at Broadford, still has provision since the refurb took place & new pumps put in,
Happy travels, just fill up every chance you get.

You have got your approximate consumption
2bottles is ~ 42 litres in 5 days = 8litres per day.
Some insulation will help a lot especially in the evenings. We have thermal curtains for around the cab behind the swivel seats, we also use the concertina blinds all around during the dark hours.
Setting the ventilation to recirculate helps combat draughts.
If you have access to hookup then run the heating on electric priority.
Refill your bottles wherever you see an lpg pump, we found autogas more frequently than the apps suggested, at least around Inverness.

Our 7.75m Hymer seems to use about 5 litres per day offgrid down to about 0° C.

8 litres a day sounds a lot, we went away at new year, and used about 35 litres in about 10 off why, again 8.5 m van.

Just a thought, the only reliable indication of gas consumption is when you fill the bottles as it is always full to full.
You shouldn't go by the bottle gauges as they are hard to interpret especially at the empty end.
Refill 42litres and both bottles are truly empty.
We have an auto change valve and I start getting edgy at the start of the red zone on the second bottle, but that is usually more than a day, you may want to plan on being somewhere in the green at 10 o'clock on the picture below.

I had silver screens fitted & all possible vents shut , there was curtains & a blanket shutting out the cab gas consumption was calculated accurately , both bottles were filled at start of journey & refilled on return
we have a heat exchanger so van was hot on arrival at our destination & also heat when driving home

I was just wondering how other people manage , perhaps i was treating the wife too well with 21deg ?

We got a crafter 6,5m and 4m the habitation area. Super self insulated.
In Scotland with temp down to -4 deg , we managed 6 days with 18,5L of lpg. That’s cooking, heating and hot water. All by Propex. Termostat set at 20 deg. Water 70 deg. Two nights we had ehu and heated water. Heating is gas only. So around 3L per day approx. Your consumption is high, big loses due to little insulation.

i Was wondering recently if anyone carries a spare bottle filled with lpg? Someone must have done for instances like this. I’d had a beer at the time but I’m still wondering.

Mark 49... yea I do.. 30ltr underslung tank and just been away for five nights. Filled up on way home and only took 15ltr... so 30ltr tank @ 80% = 24ltr.... so plenty left in tank. BUT when i see red light on gauge i start to worry... So always carry extra bottle this time of year and no NEVER had to use it... that paranoid when I was tugger with 2 bottles and auto changer I had to go out to get replacement whenever one emptied even though I knew I had plenty.

Sorry guys I don’t know that effing brand , If is it like prada she might go for it ?

No no much cheaper and more thermal than Prada

This winter has been so mild we haven’t been using as much lpg as usual ?
In cold weather Head of climate control can use a 6kg in a day ( I think that is her record use ) ⚠ 11Kg is normally around 3 days at freezing or just below ?⚠We always take a 19kg Calor as back up in winter which I run through the filler point with a local cylinder connection hose ?

thanks for the reply ?

that’s confirming my usages are reasonably standard

I think she will need to invest in the effin range as recommended by bigtwin & poppycamper ?
